Birmingham, Alabama is truly a southern city, with plenty of southern hospitality and a variety of activities to see and do. Because Alabama boasts a mild climate for a majority of the year, Birmingham is the perfect vacation spot. Once you¡¯ve settled in, you can explore the city streets or venture a few miles away.
When you are planning your southern vacation, you might want to check out the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center¡¯s agenda. The center plays hosts to a variety of musical acts all year long. You just might find a concert that you¡¯ve been dying to see.
While you are downtown, make plans to visit the McWane Center. This is a hands-on science museum that covers over 150,000 square feet. The McWane Center also offers an IMAX theater which shows a variety of movies.
Next, be sure and visit the Birmingham Zoo. This zoo, which is located in the center of Birmingham, has over 700 animals. Adults and children alike will enjoy a day or just an afternoon spent here. Birmingham also has its own amusement park. Visionland continues to grow and now consists of two parks, Magic Adventure Theme Park and Splash Beach Water Park.
Vulcan Park is home to the largest cast metal statue in the world, called the Vulcan. Both the park and the statue have had makeovers and offer breathtaking views of the city below. Vulcan Park is located on the top of Red Mountain.
Oak Mountain State Park, also located in Birmingham, is Alabama¡¯s largest state park. You can participate in a variety of activities including, hiking, horseback riding, mountain bike riding, boating, and fishing. While you are there, be sure and visit the wildlife center. Here you can see non-releasable owls and hawks in their natural habitat and take a self-guided walk around the center.
There are several museums located in and around Birmingham. The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame offers many historic musical exhibits. Alabama¡¯s numerous sports stars are honored at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. The Birmingham Museum of Art is known as one of the finest art museums in the South, and you can spend an afternoon perusing the over 21,000 works of art located here.
Birmingham is also the home of the Birmingham Barons, the Chicago White Sox affiliate team. The Birmingham Steel Dogs is the city¡¯s arena football team. You can also place a few bets on some swift greyhounds at the Birmingham Race Course.
Once you¡¯ve explored the city, you might want to venture a few miles outside of Birmingham. DeSoto Caverns is a truly spectacular cave. The cavern is full of wonderful rock formations, and the park surrounding the cavern has approximately twenty activities for tourists to do, including panning for gold and digging for crystals.
If racing is your passion, you won¡¯t have to drive far to reach the Talladega Superspeedway. It is known as the fastest and most competitive race course in the world. Located nearby is the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Here you can discover the history of motorsports and try your hand at racing in the race car simulator.
Birmingham has plenty of wonderful restaurants and fine shopping. No matter what you enjoy, this grand, southern city offers plenty of activities and interests for any age.
