Traveling Options for Young Adults
Many times rental villas, condos and other resorts refuse to rent units to individuals under 25 years of age unless they are married or accompanied by a parent or guardian. For serious vacationers, wandering souls and spring breakers alike, this difficulty in securing accommodations can put a real damper on vacation plans. Despite these tribulations, students and young travelers may find themselves calling endless hotel chains, sleazy motels and vacation rentals in search of an exception to the rule. For those with little patience, this may become a daunting task.
Instead of spending every moment of free time researching potential accommodations for the week¡¯s stay, young adults with the travel bug can explore other options with quicker, more fruitful results.
Turn your trip into an adventure¡
Forget about a week in the Florida Keys and start throwing darts at a map. Plan an all-American road trip and explore many areas rather than just one specific location. Gather a group of your closest friends, pack a cooler full of snacks and enough clothes and toiletries to last the duration of your vacation and begin planning an itinerary. Consider the total distance you are willing to travel on your road trip and be sure that someone in your group has a reliable vehicle with a good amount of breathing room.
Map out all the specific locations you and your companions would like to visit and plan your route from one destination to the next. Also do your best to locate hotel or motel accommodations along the way prior to departure so that your group will have a place to sleep each night. You may also wish to pack a tent and some sleeping bags on the chance that you are able to find a few campgrounds during your trip. Be sure to pack a camera or camcorder to permanently record your experience and all the fun memories.
Welcome the great outdoors¡
If a road trip isn¡¯t quite your thing, consider planning a vacation at a place where your group can stay at a campground. Whether sleeping in a tent, cabin or trailer, the cost of your trip is sure to be more affordable as compared to a week¡¯s stay in a hotel room or other accommodation. Depending on where you plan to spend your trip, you may even pay more in gasoline getting there than you do for the privilege to sleep on the ground in a tent for a week! Just be sure to pack extra blankets, tarps for rain shields, bug spray and garbage bags. Also remember to bring rope so you can hang your garbage bags from the trees to prevent wild critters from helping themselves to your refuse.
Pack a cooler with nonperishable foods, napkins, paper plates and utensils. Find out ahead of time if there is a community bathhouse where you can use electronic devices such as hairdryers so you know which items to pack and which ones to leave home. Consult with your traveling buddies to see who is bringing what and make efforts not to duplicate unnecessary items in order to save space.
Move in with kin¡
Failing all else, consider the options available to you and your friends based on whose aunt, uncle, grandparents, cousins or friends live in or own a vacation home in a certain part of the country. For a really cheap rate or possibly even for free, you and your friends could crash on the floor for sleeping purposes and enjoy the beach, countryside and other local attractions during the day.
Hostels aren¡¯t so hostile¡
For those traveling out of the country, a few overnight stays in a hostel may prove to be both an affordable and a cultural experience. Though many beds are often tucked into a single room, for the purpose of sleeping, a hostel is the way to go. The money saved by staying at these inexpensive establishments can be better spent on sightseeing, special events and activities, tours and souvenirs.
It¡¯s not what you know, but whom you know¡
Search for a private owner who rents to young adults at or just outside of a resort community. Vacation home rentals may be more accessible to older, more mature travelers, but be sure to offer references and put your best foot forward when emailing or calling with a polite inquiry about the property. You can find out about private rentals by doing a search online, though a travel agent will also be prepared to offer you good advice on the planning of your trip.
No matter what you and your friends decide to do for your vacation and its accommodations, remember to practice responsible behavior, especially if part of your vacation will involve alcoholic beverages. Remember to bring a cell phone or phone card, credit card in case of any unexpected expenses and some loose change and a few dollars for tolls along the way. Once you get there, don¡¯t forget to take photographs so you will remember your vacation for years to come. |
