You don¡¯t need to go to Italy to find romance because you¡¯ll find it in many different areas of Michigan. This is not a surprise to many people who live in the state. This great lakes state is full of good times and romantic spots that will keep you coming back year after year. 

Holland Michigan /Sagatuck and Douglas: 

Holland Michigan is situated in the West side of the state. This little Dutch town is reminiscent of a little village. It truly has a small town feel with its many shops, art galleries and restaurants. In May is a great time to visit since they host their annual Tulip Time festival. Make sure to visit Tunnel Park, where it is rumored that the writer of the ¡°Wizard of Oz¡± wrote the famous story. There¡¯s also incredible bike paths and walking trails that could entertain you and your partner for hours. A great date night would be to walk along lake Michigan or dine at a lakeside restaurant like the famous Ottawa Beach Inn (known to the locals simply as ¡°OBI¡±). 

About 20 minutes south of Holland is a great artsy town of Sagatuck and Douglas. This is a true lakeside retreat and has numerous shops with interesting merchandise like Parisian clocks and unique cookbooks (which would surely impress your wife). There are a tremendous amount of art galleries and shops to peruse that sell artwork at incredibly affordable prices. Show your loved one a little romance by giving them a piece of artwork. They will appreciate it and always remember your romantic trip to the west coast of Michigan every time they look at it.  

Mackinac Island / Upper Peninsula:

Mackinac Island is one of the most romantic places in Michigan. Imagine a place where there are no cars, many bike paths where you can enjoy the two-seater rental bikes and one of the grandest hotels on Earth ¨C The Grand Hotel. This hotel has the reported longest porch around, at an astonishing 660 feet long. The hotel is still traditional in the terms of a formal dining experience. There is a five-course meal and you must dress for dinner ¨C meaning formal dresses for the ladies and a suit or tux for the men. Other options for couples to do on Mackinac Island are to take a romantic carriage ride. You could also enjoy golfing, hiking or horseback riding. After all the adventure, get a massage together at the hotel¡¯s spa. 

Wilderness State Park is another must-see location in the U.P., but only if you¡¯ve been a couple for a while. You¡¯ll need to be able to enjoy each other¡¯s company in the most rustic of atmospheres. There are cabins situated in the middle of the woods ¨C some even have a beachfront location. Keep in mind that there are no showers (only at the nearby campsite), outhouses for bathrooms (about 10 feet from the cabin) and no electricity. However, this can be extremely romantic when there¡¯s no TV, phone or any other modern convenience that can distract you away from each other.  You could take a stroll on the beach or through the woods, visit the local shops that sell Native American Merchandise and when you return make your dinner on a grill and eat Smores under the stars.   

Frankenmuth: 

This is another unique destination in Michigan about 20 minutes north of Flint, Michigan. It¡¯s a unique German town where you¡¯ll find tremendous architecture, German Cheese and fine German restaurants, where the servers are in Bavarian Costume. Walk the quaint streets or sit by the river for a picnic. You could also enjoy a romantic carriage ride together.   

Marshall Michigan: 

This quaint little Michigan town is renowned for its beautiful small town architecture and has a laid-back feel. The many forms of 19th century architecture include the American Museum of Magic, the U.S. Postal Museum and the Honolulu House Museum. This tour of the city would make for a very romantic weekend getaway or day trip. There are a few bed and breakfast hotels that would complete the romantic trip. Other ideas would be to try the historic walking tour of Marshall with your partner. Or, take the Marshall River Walk, which is a 1.6-mile tour of Rice Creek and the Kalamazoo River.  

Detroit:

Over the years Detroit has had a bad reputation, but in recent years there has been quite a few renovations to the motor city. Comerica Park, the Tigers Stadium has really brought class to the city. For an interesting date, try a Tigers game. For dinner head to Greek Town in the heart of Detroit for Flaming Cheese known by the Greeks as Saganaki, where the waiter¡¯s say ¡°Opa¡± and other famous Greek dishes like Lamb or wrapped grape leaves. That evening head to the Renaissance Hotel¡¯s rotating restaurant for drinks and spectacular views of the city.  

Visiting Michigan for your romantic retreat will not disappoint. You¡¯ll find it to be increasingly special when you make the trip to the Great Lakes state.
