Brazil¡¯s capitol of Brasilia has a unique history and interesting attractions. The man regarded as the forefather of Brasilia, Juscelino Kubitschek (or simply JK as he is also known) won his presidential candidacy on his promise to move the country¡¯s capitol from Rio de Janeiro to an inland location. Four years after he was elected, he managed to do what many thought was impossible and fulfilled his dream.

 JK wisely devised a competition for the city plans, and the winning proposal was a monument to modern efficiency, with specific zones for specific activities. Critics feel that Brasilia is too austere and lacks the personality of other major cities. Most feel, however, that Brasilia¡¯s true beauty lies in its modern simplicity. Brazil¡¯s foremost designers, artists, and architects have all left their mark on Brasilia.

It should come as no surprise to learn that a majority of the tourist attractions in Brasilia are architecturally focused. Oscar Niemeyer is the famed architect behind some of Brasilia¡¯s most lauded landmarks. One such site is the Palico do Itimaraty. A palace designed by Niemeyer, it is now receiving hall for foreign dignitaries.  The inside of the palace is an eclectic mix of the modern with it¡¯s vast scale, and the past as it is filled with antiques.

One of Brasilia¡¯s most iconic structures is the Congresso Nacional. It is a structure that looks like a tall tower emerging between two bowls, one turned up and one turned down. Tours run on a daily basis, and you might be able to get a glimpse of government in progress as the Congresso Nacional houses both the Senate and the Chamber of the Deputies. 

Another Niemeyer structure worth checking out is the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida. This cathedral is located near the Congresso Nacional, and resembles an inverted chalice and a crown of thorns. The beauty of the outside is surpassed only by the beauty of the inside of the cathedral. A number of sculptures and extensive stained glass work overhead make this one of foremost Niemeyer¡¯s masterpieces.

A final architectural site worth visiting is the JK monument. Visitors can pay their respects to the founder of the city, and view a number of personal artifacts of the former President that are on display. Also of interest at this monument is an exhibition of failed city plans and photographs of the building phases that Brasilia endured.

Not all of Brasilia¡¯s attractions are made of concrete. The Parque Nacional de Brasilia is a national park with walking trails, an enjoyable way to spend and afternoon. Also inside the park are two mineral springs, which brings visitors who bath in their healing waters. 

No visit to Brasilia would be complete without a trip to the top of the TV Tower. Standing nearly 250 feet of the air, the TV Tower in Brasilia is one of the tallest of its type in the world. On the weekends, there is a market at the base of the tower where you can purchase some local wares to commutate your trip. If you are lucky enough to time your ascent to a sunset, you will get one of the most magnificent views in all of Brazil.
