Botswana is not the typical tourist destination for the average traveler.  While it is certainly no Disney World or Madrid, Botswana offers a variety of sights to see and things to do¡ªin fact, it offers arguably the most unique experiences a tourist could want, or handle.  Visiting Botswana is not for everyone.  Traveling to this country means that you are assuming the reasonability for interacting, on a very close level, with nature and wildlife¡ªsometimes, dangerous wildlife.  

Botswana is roughly the size of Texas.  It is landlocked and bordered by South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.  It is covered mostly by the Kalahari, and most of the population is settled in the southeast and east of the country.  Here are some of the places you should visit if you make the journey to this remarkable land. 

Chobe National Park is in a corner of Africa that is still blesses with the game-rich feeling of the old continent centuries ago.  Here four countries come together¡ªBotswana, Zambia, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.  It is home to some of Botswana¡¯s most interesting and varied wildlife and is best known for its elephant inhabitants.  It has the continent¡¯s highest concentration of elephants.  The Chobe River runs through the park, attracting these great pachyderms.  A tourist can catch a glimpse of these and other wonderful beats on a sunset boat ride along the impressive river.  From the banks of the river one will see the vastness of the floodplains that surround the area and give shelter to thousands of creatures, large and small.  The price to stay on the park site ranges, but will generally cost a traveler three hundred for the hotel soon and additional fees for tours.  

Jack¡¯s Camp is located in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana.  Ostrich Jack, a heroic hunter and explorer of the past, is sketched in this corner of the country.  Here the traveler will see an interesting sight¡ªthousands of animals at a site where there once was a salt pan the size of Lake Victoria.  When a large rain spell came years ago the saltpans sprouted green and created a large water source for flocks of flamingoes, and later, other animals including zebras, lions, cheetahs, and hyenas.  

Abu¡¯s Camp is on the Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world.  The only way to enter the area is on an elephant through the delta¡¯s crystalline water waters. Once on the delta you will enjoy a safari tour that will show you African nature up close and personal.  This delta trip is expensive, costing up to four thousand dollars; however, most people who have taken the voyage have claimed it to be one of the most memorable experiences of a lifetime. 

Getting to Botswana can be a challenge, as it is considered a relatively remote destination.  Flights from Johannesburg are available and Air Botswana provides service from Gaborone (though Johannesburg), Harare and Lusaka and internal flights to Francistown, Maun and Kasane. The best time to visit is in the summer months, from October to March.  During the summer the temperatures are extremely high, reaching over forty degrees Celsius midday.  The cooler months are July and August, and are the best months to visit for this reason.  Malaria is a serious problem especially in the north of the country, though not so much in Gaborone. The mosquito is becoming more and more resistant to drugs so get medical advice on what malaria tablets to take before you leave.  Immunization against tetanus, typhoid and yellow fever should be completed before departure to Botswana.
