Philadelphia¡¯s Museum Mile has something for everyone. Whether you want to enjoy the classics, nurture your inner naturalist, or simply want to ponder the just plain strange, there is a museum that will let you do just that in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art

With more than 200 galleries, the Philadelphia Museum of Art offers arty assets from all over the world. The museum is considered to be among the largest and most significant art museums in the United States. Special collections worth noting include the museum¡¯s Asian art collection, which contains items (ceramics, sculpture, an entire ceremonial tea house, carpets) dating from the third millennium B.C. to the present day. The museum¡¯s American collection iss the largest anthology in the world of works by Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins as well as a wide variety of Pennsylvania German art and furniture and silver by early Philadelphia craftsmen.

The Rodin Museum

An easy walk from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the petite but potent Rodin Museum is thought to be one the most superb collections of sculptures by Auguste Rodin outside of his homeland of France. To enter the museum, you will walk through a bronze cast of the sculptor¡¯s unfinished masterpiece ¡°The Gates of Hell.¡± Once inside, you will enjoy finished bronzes, plaster studies, and an excellent assortment of drawings, prints, letters, and books. 

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays as well as most legal holidays. Admission to the museum consists of a $3 per person honor box. Public tours of the museum are offered at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday as well as on the first and third Saturdays of each month. In addition, there are public tours every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00 a.m. For information and directions, call 215-763-8100.

The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum 

Where else can you dig for dinosaur bones or climb inside a Tyrannosaurus Rex skull? The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum is not only a dinosaur-lovers dream, but offers a world-renowned natural history collection that includes over 17 million specimens of plants, animals and other organisms, including library holdings that document scientific discovery from the 1500's to the present. Special exhibits change frequently, so you will want to call ahead or visit the museum¡¯s website for the most up-to-date information.

The Mutter Museum

If you enjoy giggling at the grotesque, do not pass up the Mutter Museum. This museum¡¯s eerie collection of 19th and 20th century fluid-preserved anatomical and pathological specimens as well as medical equipment is not for the faint of stomach. In the upper gallery, you will find a collection of 19th century wax models of skin disease, skulls and other bones showing the effects of syphilis, and the ¡°Soap Lady, ¡° a corpse recovered from a local cemetery that was turned into a waxy lye soap substance. The lower gallery includes such objects as a plaster cast of Chinese twins Chang and Eng Bunker, Chief Justice John Marshall¡¯s bladder stones, and a huge human colon removed posthumously from a 29-year-old man in 1892. Enough said.
