Think of Bali, and you think of a tropical island paradise with temples, exotic gardens and beautiful beaches. Denpasar, the capital of the island of Bali (part of the island nation of Indonesia) offers these things and much more, as well as a chance to immerse yourself among the people and culture of this fascinating corner of Asia. Bali was colonized by the Dutch and their influence can still be felt all over the island.

One way to experience Bali is to get married here - what could be more romantic or memorable than getting married in such a beautiful location? Exchanging vows on a beach or in a temple here has become so popular that there are many companies that will arrange everything from accommodation to transport to paperwork and the marriage license. And after the ceremony, you have the chance to honeymoon in one of the world¡¯s most romantic places.

The center of Denpasar is the large open space called Puputan Square, originally laid out in 1906 to commemorate the defense by the islanders against the colonizing Dutch. At each corner of the square stands a 15 foot high stone statue depicting the god Shiva; and in the center of the square is a rather graphic monument of children ready to fight the invaders with daggers drawn. In the narrow and congested streets around the square are many of the town¡¯s hotels, restaurants and shopping areas.

An excellent overview of the religion and culture of the island can be found at the main museum in Denpasar, originally founded by the Dutch who, ironically, wanted to preserve the islands culture. The museum consists of several buildings designed in traditional local style, which apart from the exhibits; also give a good overview of the local architecture. The exhibits include prehistoric pieces, traditional artifacts used in everyday Balinese life, dance costumes and religious artifacts. 

The Balinese culture and religion are among the oldest in the world, and one of the highlights of a visit here is a trip to one of the temples. Tourists are allowed in the temples, but it is a requirement to be ¡®properly¡¯ dressed in a sarong, which you can hire at many temples, as well as to be polite and respectful when inside. One of the most important rules when visiting temples is never to put yourself on a position higher than the priest, for example by standing above him. 

The most important temple in Denpasar is the state temple called Pura Jagatnatha, which is close to the museum and Puputan Square. The temple faces west, as is the custom on the island. Every afternoon local people come here to make offerings and pray, and there are regular festivals held here throughout the year, as well as puppet shows in the evening. Inside the temple, the shrine is made from white coral and the walls are decorated with carvings of scenes from religious texts.

Bali is famous for its beautiful white beaches and there are several in the Denpasar area. The nearby town of Kuta is a large resort area which is a good place to go surfing and also has a wide selection of luxury hotels and restaurants. Kuta is also known as the place to watch the spectacular sunset every evening. Up and down the coast from Kuta can be found more secluded beaches complete with swaying palm trees and small huts selling food and drink. 

An easy excursion from Denpasar is to the small town of Ubud, considered by many travelers to best represent the ¡®real¡¯ Bali. Surrounded by mountains, lush jungle and rice fields, Ubud offers many small museums and art galleries, as well as being a great place to shop for authentic Balinese handicrafts, woodcarvings and jewelry. If you are in Bali for an extended period of time, Ubud also offers various classes you can take on crafts and woodcarving.

Bali is not the easiest place to get to; and a trip here is something of an adventure. But, as one of the world¡¯s most romantic and beautiful places, it¡¯s a journey well worth it.
