With its natural beauty, beaches, great shopping and charming hotels in beautifully restored plantations, the island of Nevis offers many fun and interesting activities to its visitors.
The island was first settled in 1628 by the English from nearby St. Kitts. Plantations soon sprouted up all over Nevis, and for a time the island enjoyed popularity and prosperity. Nevis was a British colony until 1967 when, along with its sister island St. Kitts, it became a free associated state of the United Kingdom. In 1983 Nevis and St. Kitts achieved independence from Great Britain and together they now form one nation.
Nevis offers a variety of sights for visitors. Walking tours are available in Charlestown, the island¡¯s quaint capital city where there are no traffic lights. The tours afford the visitor wonderful views of the unique island architecture and grand colonial homes.
While in Charlestown, check out the ruins of the Baths Hotel and Spring House. The hotel, built in 1778, was once a stop for wealthy individuals seeking relief from arthritis in the spring baths. Today the hotel is in ruins, but is still worth a look.
The Nelson Museum pays tribute to the great naval hero Horatio Nelson, who was the enforcer of England¡¯s Navigation Acts in Antigua and later moved to Nevis. He eventually met his end in the Battle of Trafalgar. The museum contains all sorts of remembrances of Nelson, including letters, furniture and paintings.
To further explore Nevis¡¯ past, visit the Museum of Nevis History. There are displays about Nevis¡¯ original inhabitants, island arts & crafts, politics and religion, to name a few. There is also a display about Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of Treasury, who was born on the island of Nevis.
Another popular tourist destination is the Eden Brown estate, now in ruins, where the ghost of a young bride-to-be is said to reside. According to legend, the night before the wedding her fianc¨¦ was involved in a duel with his best man and was killed. The grief drove the young woman mad, and to this day her spirit roams the estate. The estate is government owned and open to the public.
Two local churches may be of interest to travelers. Built in 1643, St. Thomas Anglican Church is the oldest church on Nevis. St. John¡¯s Church, built in 1680, boasts the marriage certificate of Horatio Nelson and Frances Nisbet, a local widow.
For shopping on the island, head to Charlestown¡¯s Main Street. The charming shops sell everything from collectible stamps and local pottery to t-shirts.
Nevis has several beautiful beaches to choose from for different activities. Two of the most popular are Pinney¡¯s Beach and Oualie Beach. Pinney¡¯s Beach is lined with hotels and bars while busy Oualie Beach is popular with water sports lovers.
Finally, there are several opportunities for sports and exercise enthusiasts on the island, including swimming, snorkeling, hiking and horseback riding. Golfers can go to the Four Seasons Resort Nevis for the beautiful and challenging 18-hole course. Likewise, tennis enthusiasts will find a top-notch court at the Four Seasons, open to non-guests. The Oualie Beach Hotel allows non-guests to use its gym for a fee. |
