Located on the banks of the infamous Nile River, the ancient city of Cairo is one of the most popular travel destinations in Egypt.  Each year millions of people visit Cairo to partake in local markets, commodities and historic wonders.  What are some places a person should make a point to visit while in Cairo?

Egyptian Museum. Since the 19th century, Cairo¡¯s Egyptian Museum has been one of the most extraordinary museums in the world.  The museum displays over 100,000 antiques, artifacts and relics from every era of Egyptian history.  Of particular interest is the infamous golden mask of Tutankhamen, the museum¡¯s Mummy Room that displays a number of pharaohs from Egypt¡¯s past and the Amarna Room of Akhenaten.

Pyramids of Giza. No trip to Cairo is complete without a visit to the pyramids of Giza.  The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkauhe were completed over 4,500 years ago.  The pyramids are part of the original Seven Wonders of the World and are the only wonders of the ancient world that still survive.  A person traveling near the pyramids should also take time to view the world renowned Sphinx near the Pyramid of Khafre.  Although time and the elements have taken a toll on the Sphinx, the colossus is still awe inspiring.

Old Cairo. Old Cairo is not only one of the oldest sectors of the city but also one of the most historical.  The area¡¯s first settlement, Babylon, was created in the vicinity around 525 B.C.  The settlement eventually became a Roman fortress.  Today, travelers to the area can visit a number of historic places including the Al-Faoyoum Oasis.  Once one of the favorite destinations for Egypt¡¯s pharaohs, the Oasis measures over 40 meters wide and 35 meters long and is the largest in the country. The area around the Oasis is used primarily for native crops.

Other significant sites in Old Cairo are St. Sergius and Ben Ezra Synagogue.  Each site has a bearing in Christian history.  St. Sergius is believed to be the location where the Holy Family sought refuge when they fled to Egypt.  Ben Ezra is the oldest synagogue in Egypt.  The synagogue is believed to be near the location where the sister of the pharaoh rescued the baby Moses from the Nile.

Islamic Cairo. Cairo is home to over 250 mosques.  Visitors to the Islamic section of Cairo will be transfixed by the rich Arab architecture.  One of the most unique destinations is the mosque of Kait Bey.  Built around 1475, the tomb is one of the top showcases of the era¡¯s designs.

The Islamic sector of Cairo is also one of the Egypt¡¯s top educational centers.  Thousands of students attend one of several universities in located in the area every year.

Central Cairo. For a taste of Cairo¡¯s culture, a person should look no further than the central part of the city.  Although Central Cairo is not your typical city square, travelers can visit an assortment of markets with vendors that sell a wide assortment of local goods.  Anything from curios and silver to silk and leather goods can be found here.

Cairo¡¯s first modern hotel, the Nile Hilton, is located in Central Cairo as is the Manial Palace Museum.  The museum opened in the early 20th century and offers visitors a number of hunting displays with local game as well as one of the largest offerings of native vegetation in the area.

Cairo is not your typical modern city.  However, a person who wants to experience the history and culture of Cairo will be intrigued during his or her visit to the city.
