If you¡¯ve been planning a trip to Boston, you know how overwhelming your options are. Boston is one of those great cities that you can live in for a lifetime and still not experience all it has to offer. However, there are a few key places to visit that will leave you with unforgettable memories of America¡¯s ¡°Walking City.¡±

The New England Aquarium is a must-see attraction, especially for families. Perched on the edge of the water, the modern architecture of the building is impossible to miss. Outside, you can purchase tickets and watch the seals in the outdoor seal tank. If you¡¯re lucky, you¡¯ll arrive at feeding time to see a handler toss a frozen chunk of ice and fish to these surprisingly agile creatures.

Inside, allow your eyes a few moments to adjust to the dim lighting and take in the enormous Ocean Tank. Look down at its base to see several species of penguins, preening on rocks and zipping through pools. You¡¯ll likely see human beings perched on the rocks too, scrubbing them with special soap.

One of the world¡¯s largest tanks of any kind, the Giant Ocean Tank features saltwater creatures of all types and sizes. Climb the spiraling ramp to the top and look down over the open edge for sharks, sea turtles, and a multitude of fish. Surrounding the huge tank are smaller exhibits with beautiful and unusual aquatic life from around the world. Be on the lookout for graceful jellyfish, fish that look like tree branches, and the occasional frog or snake.

Another major tourist attraction here is the Boston Museum of Science. A visit to BMOS can easily consume an entire day, or pick and choose what you do for a shorter trip. There are many exhibits, most of them interactive, as well as daily programs and shows. One highlight is the Theater of Electricity, in which two towering devices produce real lightning - indoors! For the less science-minded, one recent exhibit featured original costumes from the Star Wars films.

BMOS also has a planetarium with astronomy shows for children and laser light shows for teens and adults. For a truly unique experience, buy tickets to see a film in the Museum¡¯s Imax Theater, a stadium-type theater with a screen several stories high. Steep seating and a state-of-the-art sound system give the feeling of being right there, so the movies often involve flights and fast motion. 

For a less structured experience, visit Quincy Market and the historical Faneuil Hall. This is a good destination for families with teens who want to explore on their own. Fenced in by two large shopping mall buildings, this area is large enough to give them some space but small and open enough to provide a degree of security. There are several dozen stores here, and shoppers will be thrilled with the variety of both local and national chains. Those looking for history will find it in Faneuil Hall, which figured prominently in the Revolutionary War. Those looking for food will find vendors from around the globe in Quincy Market.
