Wichita, Kansas, is called the "Air Capitol of the World" because of its many aviation-related factories and businesses.  Historically, the city was first an Indian village.  Later it became a frontier town on the Chisolm Trail and was frequented by cowboys.  Now a modern city, Wichita offers a variety of things to do and sights to see, whether a vacationer is interested in science, history, or just plain fun.

One thing Wichita is noted for is an abundance of museums.  On the southeast corner of the city near McConnell Air Force Base is the Kansas Aviation Museum.  This museum displays 40 historic airplanes and a large collection of model aircraft.

For those interested in prairie habitats and wildlife, the Great Plains Nature Center is located just off Highway 96 on the north side of town.  It features two miles of paved trails and the Koch Habitat Hall.

Another place of scientific interest is the Lake Afton Public Observatory located about twenty miles southwest of the city.  Here you can look through a 16-inch telescope and participate in programs that teach about astronomy.

The Sedgwick County Zoo and Botanical Gardens are located on Zoo Boulevard.  Particularly fascinating at this zoo are the Downing Gorilla Forest and the Koch Orangutan and Chimpanzee Habitat.  Other exhibits are arranged by continent.  The jungle exhibit and the Australia exhibit both allow visitors to walk through the habitat.  Birds, wallabies, and reptiles are right in there with you!

The Arkansas River, pronounced "Ar-Kansas" by locals, runs through the center of Wichita.  Downtown is a collection of "Museums on the River."  These museums include the Mid America All Indian Center, which features a replica Indian village, and Old Cow Town Museum, which is a reenacted old west town covering 17 acres.  The Indian Center is dedicated to preserving Native American culture.  At Cow Town, you can ride in a covered wagon or play games from the 1800's.

Located downtown on Amidon Street, Botanica, the Wichita Gardens, is a collection of 25 gardens, including a butterfly house that is open from June to September.

The Sedgwick County Historical Museum is located in the old city hall building.  It contains three floors of historical items of interest.  Located just down the street is the Omnisphere and Science Center, a hands-on museum for children.  Also located on the river is the Wichita Art Museum, which is the largest art museum in Kansas.  

Exploration Place is a large, new, hands-on, minds-on science museum located in the river district on McLean Boulevard.  It includes the CyberDome Theater, with a 60-foot domed screen.  It has an aviation center that contains motion flight simulators which visitors can sit in for a real flight training ride.  Another fascinating exhibit has to do with digging fossils and includes a fossil of a large marine reptile imbedded in a rock.  The animated "Kansas in Miniature" exhibit is a model of the city as it looked in the 1950's, complete with a train that can be controlled by spectators.

The Museum of World Treasures is the place to go to see Egyptian mummies, weapons and other items from ancient Greece and Rome, dinosaur fossils, and Royal Crown jewels.  This museum is located at 1st and Moseley Streets.

For shopping and dining, check out the Old Town Marketplace.  This district is a group of converted brick warehouses, some of which date back to the 1870's.  These old buildings now house more than 50 businesses, including artists' studios, unique gift shops, and restaurants.  The Old Town Marketplace is located about 10 blocks east of the river district.

Wichita also has mall shopping with the Towne East Square, a two-story mall with over 150 stores, located on East Kellogg Drive.  On West Kellog Drive is the Towne West Square with 125 stores.  A unique upscale shopping experience is available at Bradley Fair shopping center.  Here, a variety of fine stores are located on a small lake with an outdoor plaza.

Antiquers will want to check out the Flying Moose Antique Mall on the west side of the city on Kellogg, which is also known as U.S. Highway 54.  This antique mall contains 12,000 square feet of antiques and collectibles and 5000 square feet of furniture.

For families with children, Joyland is a great place to visit.  This amusement park features a large wooden roller coaster, flume rides, go-carts, bumper cars, and many other rides.  It is located at 2801 S. Hillside in the southeast corner of town.  Of similar interest is Barnacle Bill's Fanta Sea Water Park, located at 3330 North Woodlawn.

All in all, Wichita is an interesting city with a wide range of museums, good shopping, and fun things for the kids to do, too.
