Only 7 miles from Venezuela, in the southernmost region of the West Indies, lays the island nation of Trinidad. Trinidad, the birthplace of Calypso and the steel drum, offers a variety of white sand beaches, ecological sites and opportunities to shop.
Here are some of the best attractions to see on your visit to Trinidad.
1. Asa Wright Nature Center. This former cocoa and coffee plantation was opened as a 198 acre nature reserve in 1967. The nature center is home to many of the island¡¯s 108 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 55 species of reptiles, 25 species of amphibians and 617 species of butterflies.
The highlight of the Asa Wright Nature Center is the breeding colony of nocturnal oil birds, the only nocturnal fruit-eating bird in the world.
Walk the hiking trails or join a birding tour group while at Asa Wright. The Nature Center also offers accommodations for tourists.
2. Caroni Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary is the roosting site for the Scarlet Ibis, the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago. Take a guided boat ride through the swamp at dusk and watch thousands of scarlet ibis flying overhead. The guides will also point out interesting wildlife, including two-toed sloth and boa constrictors.
3. Maracas Bay. Trinidad¡¯s most popular beach is located about 45 minutes north of Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad.
The beach is about 1,850 meters of off white sand with waves ideal for surfing. The beach¡¯s facilities are well-maintained and include parking, tables, benches and locker rooms with showers and toilets.
4. Las Cuevas Bay. If you are looking for calmer waters, check out Las Cuevas Bay, located about one hour from Port of Spain. The beach is well-maintained and ideal for swimming. The facilities include parking, a snack bar, locker rooms, tables and benches.
Las Cuevas means ¡°The Caves,¡± and is named for the many caves located on the beach.
5. Charlotte Street. If you are looking for a bargain, Charlotte Street offers a variety of bargain-priced clothing, gifts and souvenirs. Even if you aren¡¯t in the market for cheap souvenirs, it is worth checking out Charlotte Street for its colorful street life or to engage in some friendly haggling.
6. Emperor Valley Zoo. Visit the national zoo in Port of Spain to view 221 different species, many of which are indigenous to Trinidad. The zoo opened in 1952 and is the only local institution that has successfully bred large numbers of local species, including iguanas, macaws and ocelots. The zoo is also home to tigers, African lions, crocodiles and tapirs.
7. Fort Picton (Martello Tower). If you are looking for a good view of the island, head to Fort Picton, one of the oldest fortifications on the island. The fort was built by Thomas Picton, Trinidad¡¯s first brutal governor.
8. National Museum and Art Gallery. Experience the culture and history of Trinidad at the National Museum, located in Port of Spain. The museum is home to depictions of life during World War II, pictures of Carnival and artifacts from the island¡¯s early settlers. The art gallery features displays of both local and internationally known artists.
9. Aripo Caves. This is the largest cave system in Trinidad, with amazing formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The caves are also home to a population of oil birds.
It may be smart to arrange a tour guide who is familiar with the area. The caves are located about four miles east of Arima.
