Since 1822, the year it was founded, the city of Boston has seen incredible changes and hosted some of the most stunning historical events of all time.  Boston¡¯s legacy as one of the chief cities of the Revolutionary War is strong, as its claim to having one of the most beloved modern cities in the United States. 

The time of the year you visit Boston will largely determine the experience you have as a tourist.  Boston can be enjoyed in all seasons, but it is best to know what type of visiting experience you want before you book your flight to Logan Airport.  

Boston in the summer is a hot spot. Reaching temperatures in the 90s, the city has a high level of humidity. People flock to the city for its sights.  In the summertime Boston can be enjoyed on the waterfront and in the city parks.  Along the harbor there are several spots to catch a sea breeze.  The New England Aquarium, located on the water, is an excellent place to visit, especially in the summer when the Boston Harbor Cruise Tours and Whale Cruises are running.  There are plenty of outdoor vendors and restaurants on or near the water as well.  Seafood is of no shortage on the waterfront; from crabs and newspaper covered-picnic tables to elegant four star dining establishments, Boston hosts them all.  If you are into the bar scene you may want to bar hop in Fanueil Hall.  Now a conglomerate of restaurants and drinking establishments, the arena used to be an area where the rebels gathered to protest British policy.  The Boston Massacre, which sparked the Revolutionary War, occurred in a spot where you can now sit and enjoy a Sam Adams brew. 

Walking or taking public transportation is easy in Boston.  Boating in the Harbor is popular as well.  There are several excellent marinas where you can dock you boat and walk into the city.  If you want a different water scene you can check out the Charles River, which runs through Harvard and the rest of Cambridge.  Kayak rentals and sailing instructional courses are offered throughout the summer, fall, and spring months.  Strolling along the Charles is a fun activity during the summer or when the leaves are turning in October.  

Following the Charles into the city will lead you past the famous Citgo Sign that sits above Fenway Park.  Going to a Red Sox game is a must in the spring, summer and fall seasons.  Fenway Park is one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the United States and is the only place you can get a true ¡°Fenway Frank¡±.  

After an afternoon Sox game it might be a good idea to blow off some steam by going shopping.  Newbury Street is known for its elegant (and expensive) boutiques and restaurants.  If you want to have a more relaxing post-game activity you can check out the Boston Common, also nearby.  Boston Common is the oldest public park in the United States.  In the Common you will find the famous ¡°Make Way for Ducklings¡± statue and the Swan Boats that go around the pond in the center of the park.  In the Common you will find people playing soccer, reading books, listening to music, and chilling out in the shade.  In the summer and fall there are free plays put on for the public up until it gets too cold at night to perform.

When winter does strike some of the activities people enjoy in the summer are postponed, but there is never a shortage of fun in this New England city.  In the wintertime the Common has a different appeal than in other months.  The Frog Pond turns into an ice-skating rink with the first freeze of the season.  Ice Cream and Lemonade Vendors that adorned the summer streets of Boston now sell Hot Chocolate and Cider.  Shopping in the city never lulls, in fact the holiday season in Boston is excellent for browsing and buying.  Downtown Crossings and the Financial District get set up for the holiday season early, and the annual tree-lighting ceremony outside of Vinny Testa¡¯s in the middle of the city is not to be missed.  In addition, the New Year¡¯s celebration, dubbed ¡°First Night¡±, while often bone-chillingly cold, is not to be missed.  The streets are opened to pedestrians during this celebration and the city is adorned with vendors, ice sculptures, comedy routines, and of course, fireworks. 

And, while venturing onto the Charles is not encouraged, Harvard Square is a good spot to check out in the cold weather.  The falling snow only accents Harvard¡¯s interesting architecture and academic charm, and the many shops and restaurants in the Square are inviting for pedestrians braving the wind outside.  Taking a tour of the oldest college in the country proves to be inspiring be it in the winter, summer, spring, or fall.

The many historic spots that can be seen in the summertime¡ªQuincy Market, Paul Revere¡¯s House, Charlestown Navy Yard, The Old Granary, and the site of the Boston Massacre are open and can be enjoyed in the winter as well.  Taking a walk on the Freedom Trail, a three-mile long walking tour passing the historic spots of interest in Boston, can be done in a t-shirt or winter jacket.  No matter what type of tourist you are¡ªcold blooded or warm blooded¡ªyou will find fun and educational activities in the city of Boston.
