Delhi has such an extraordinary array of sights and sounds and tastes and smells that the visitor must decide how to marshal his or her time.  If you're there for a day or a week, or if you're there as a tourist or on a business trip, Delhi will take you both back in time to an ancient and refined culture and to one of the most rapidly growing economic and political centers in the world.

Tourist season generally stretches from October and March with a variety of theater, music and dance festivals in the city.  Local tourist magazines are a very efficient way to see what's on, and to find organized tours that can help you get oriented to the culture and pace of Delhi.  Many of the events are in English but, unless you learned Hindi or Urdu at your mother's knee, much of the professional work of groups like the National School of Drama will be beyond your ken.  With or without an understanding of Indian languages, however, your search for the spirit of Delhi will not go unrewarded.

Delhi is as good a place as you will find to discover the vitality of classical music and dance.  Although the classical forms might not have developed in the city, some of the best performers of the arts have moved there for their careers.  The Kamani Auditorium and the India International Center on Lodhi Road are two of the centers for classical music and dance.  At the Kalmani you can also find theater in English performed by a number of amateur and professional theater groups during the winter theater season.

During January of each year you can attend the International Film Festival of India at the Siri Fort Auditorium.  Foreign and Indian films are also shown throughout the city during the festival.

Delhi museums offer a way to explore the past of city as well as of the nation.  The National Museum is located on Janpath and is a trip back through the centuries of Indian history and culture.  The three floors of the museum are set up to allow the visitor to move effortlessly from century to century - a long process for life in India.  An especially important collection to view is the Serindian Collection which shows artifacts from the Silk Route in Central Asia which used to be the trade route connecting ancient civilizations.  

Less exotic perhaps is the National Rail Museum located in Chanakya Puri.  The Indian rail system was central to the growth of the 19th century British economy when capitalists finished building the rails for the British Isles and found their route to expansion in India.  Part of the tradition of this rail expansion is the modern history of economic growth and political subjugation that was such an important part of 20th century world history.  Looking at an old train engine might not seem exciting, but many lives and fortunes were made and lost on the coattails of that machine.

Delhi is a large and vibrant city and the visitor shouldn't pass up the opportunity to experience life beyond the museums and theaters.  The famous city market, Chandini Chowk, is a full day's journey into centuries of experience with traders and bargains.  From leather goods to electric goods this is the place to see the inhabitants of the city deal with each other as they have for centuries.  Many of the shops in the area have almost as long a history as the city itself.  While you're learning about these histories, or listening to the latest interpretation of the local guides, you can also partake in the popular Delhi activity of eating the exquisite cuisine of the local area.  

Delhi is a large city with centuries of history.  Whatever your reasons for being there, give it time to allow the city to show its rhythm and its grace.  Go there to become a part of its history and its culture and both you and Delhi will be better for it.
