Ocho Rios in Jamaica means ¡°eight rivers¡±. It is located in Saint Ann¡¯s parish 60 miles from Annotto to Discovery Bay. What was once a mere fishing port that did banana exports is now a thriving tourist spot. Ocho Rio is a crescent cove in the middle of the Jamaican coastline to the north, and every year it commands more than 700,000 tourists to its cove. There are several places to play polo, golf, scuba, or go deep sea fishing. 

If you are interested in seeing the spots that most all tourist hit before they arrive back home, you¡¯d have to go to Discovery Bay, Fern Gully, The Ruins, Double V, Shaw Park Botanical Gardens, Dunn¡¯s River, and Prospect Plantation.

Discovery Bay

After Columbus arrived in 1494, the Spaniards established a port of call here in Discovery Bay. It now has a three acre park and Spanish colonial era buildings. Discovery Bay includes the Portside Villas, Sea Shanty, and the Discovery Bay Hotel, to name a few places you can stay here.

Fern Gully

What was once a river bed, is now a thriving array of ferns. It is three miles through the valley and there are over 600 varieties of ferns. A plethora of botanicals to delight you, this is truly a visit for the soul (and your camera).

The Ruins

A delightful restaurant that is based at the foot of a waterfall. It too is surrounded by lush gardens to make American restaurant atmosphere stand up and beg for mercy.

Double V

Who goes to Jamaica and doesn¡¯t partake in the traditional jerk food? At Double V there is a tempting garden and plenty of jerk food, possibly the best on the island to hear some say. It is just beyond the Pineapple Shopping Plaza.

Shaw Park Botanical Gardens

This is truly a botanist and gardener¡¯s delight. Twenty five acres of tropical plants and a river that snakes its way throughout. There are plenty of birds and color in this arrangement. Again, another rich garden to make you and your camera very happy.

Dunn¡¯s River

The number one attraction on the island, one that commands near one million visitors annually. It is a river that goes down huge limestones to a white sand beach. The falls you may climb with a guide. The Falls Guides will also hold your camera and photograph you while you climb. There are wonderful shrubs, ferns, and other garden delights beside and in the river. Try to do this on days when the cruise ships aren¡¯t coming in so you won¡¯t have to wait in line.

Prospect Plantation

This is indeed a working plantation and was the home of the late British author Sir Harold Mitchell. A tour of the school he founded for less fortunate Jamaicans is also here. On a clear day you can view Cuba, 90 miles away. These grounds have seen very famous guests; trees were planted here by Charlie Chaplain and Winston Churchill, just to name a few.

Ocho Rios is a wonderous hideaway. One that is finally garnering the respect of its own people and the tourists that had skipped over it for decades to go to more popular locations that surround it. If you are headed to Jamaica, don¡¯t forget these wonderful treats that Ocho Rios has waiting for you.
