Whether just a stop in your travels or your final destination, Kansas City has a myriad of attractions for tourists of all ages and interests.
For anyone who likes animals, there¡¯s the Kansas City Zoo located in historic Swope Park. Visitors to the zoo can walk through an African Veldt; observe the wildlife of Australia and be entertained by the antics of the sea lions. The zoo is open daily. Located at the entrance to the zoo is the Sprint Imax Theater. The theater features a 6 ? story screen and surround sound. Show times and features vary.
If science is more to your liking, a trip to Science City in historic Union Station may be necessary. Science City includes more than 50 hands-on and interactive exhibits that every child is sure to enjoy, while learning at the same time. Science City is open Wednesday through Sunday, and some holidays.
While at Science City, be sure to wander around Union Station. There are plenty of restaurants, and plenty of history. Union Station is the original railroad station that served Kansas City when train travel was a popular mode of transportation. It was built in 1914, and at the time was the third largest depot in the country. The depot was the site of the Union Station Massacre in 1933. Four policemen and prisoner Frank Nash were killed by a group of men trying to free Nash. It is widely believed that one of the men trying to free Nash was Charles ¡°Pretty Boy¡± Floyd. The bullet holes from the gunfire are still visible in the building¡¯s fa?ade outside the east entrance to Union Station. The station is open daily.
Located across the street from Union Station is the Liberty Memorial, the only World War I memorial in the United States. Newly refurbished, the Liberty Memorial consists of a memorial walkway, mall, museums and observation tower. Closed Mondays and some holidays.
If you like to shop, be sure to visit the Westin Crown Center shops, across from the Liberty Memorial and on the opposite corner from Union Station. The Crown Center shops feature a variety of one-of-a-kind shops and exclusive stores and restaurants.
Crown Center is adjacent to the headquarters of Hallmark Cards and the Hallmark Visitors Center. At the Visitors Center, you can see exhibits of Hallmark cards, ornaments and gifts throughout the years, learn about the history of Hallmark, and see how cards are made. Open Tuesday through Saturday.
For more shopping and dining, don¡¯t miss the Country Club Plaza. The Plaza was the first outdoor shopping district in the country. The Spanish-style architecture of the area is highlighted by the Swanson Tower, a replica of the Tower of Seville in Seville, Spain.
If you are in Kansas City between Thanksgiving and New Year¡¯s, a visit to the Plaza is a must. During the holiday season, the entire Plaza area is adorned with more than 250,000 twinkling Christmas lights.
A short distance from the Plaza, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of the most prestigious art galleries in the country, but is probably most noted for its collection of Asian works. The museum is built on the site of one of the mansions of William Rockhill Nelson, the founder of the Kansas City Star newspaper.
If you are in the market for nightlife, head to Westport, located between The Plaza and the Crown Center area. The Westport area has an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops. A must see if visiting Westport is Kelly¡¯s Westport Inn. Kelly¡¯s occupies the oldest Kansas City building that is still standing. Built about 1854, the building operated as a grocery store, trading post and wagon outfitter store. Daniel Boone¡¯s nephew owned the store at that time. It¡¯s been operating as a bar since prohibition was repealed.
Another attraction for the young and the young at heart is Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, Kansas City¡¯s theme parks.
If the kids are old enough to spend a day on their own, drop them off at the theme parks; and mom and dad can head to the casinos for the day. Kansas City is home to 4 casinos, all located within a 15 minute drive of the theme parks.
There are many other attractions that make Kansas City unique. Visitors to the city should have no problem finding things to do that everyone in the family will enjoy.
