Sintra is one of the oldest and most beautiful towns in Portugal. Although only about 20 miles from the bustling capital Lisbon, it＊s a different world 每 a world of whitewashed villas, luxuriant gardens and royal palaces. Sintra＊s most famous resident was the poet Byron, whose praise helped put the small town on the map in the early 19th century. Sintra consequently became a stop on the European ＆Grand Tour＊ and today it is just as appealing.

You can easily take tours here from Lisbon, or visit for the day on your own, but Sintra really justifies a visit of several days. If you visit the town during the summer, the Sintra festival attracts music lovers from June to early August. 

The highlight of Sintra is the spectacular Royal Palace, which was used as a palace until 1910 and last occupied by the grandmother of Manuel II, Portugal＊s last king. The original palace was founded by the Moors, and has long since been torn down; the building here today incorporates Moorish and Gothic decoration and furnishings as it has been added to over the years. The palace has a superb collection of Flemish and Iberian paintings and tapestries, as well as a room containing coats of arms of aristocratic Portuguese families. One of the highlights of the palace is the glazed earthenware tiles which line many of the rooms.

Sintra actually boasts two palaces 每 perched high above the town is the National Palace at Pena, last occupied by Queen Amelia in the early 20th century; many rooms and furnishings are just as she left them. Apart from the palace itself, one of the highlights is the beautiful park in which the castle is situated, renowned for its many varieties of plants and shrubs. 

The third ＆must-see＊ sight in the town is the Castle of the Moors, built sometime between the 8th and 9th centuries, and occupying a commanding position overlooking the town. The castle is largely a ruin, although parts of it were restored in the 19th century, and today you can see part of the walls, an Arab arched gate and the remains of several houses. Inside the chapel are some wonderful fresco paintings. It＊s worth visiting the castle just for the spectacular views over the town and the Atlantic Ocean.  

Sintra boasts several modest museums 每 the Modern Art Museum has a collection of paintings from the 20th century, set in an interesting 1920s building; the Regional Museum has collections of local archaeological remains and religious art. The highlight here is some well-preserved Neolithic remains from the surrounding area. Finally, for something that the kids will enjoy - Sintra has Portugal＊s largest children＊s museum with over 20,000 exhibits of toys and games spanning the last 50 years, most of them collected by just one man. 

Shopping is one of the highlights of any visit to Sintra. The narrow streets of the town center offer many shops selling handmade folk art from the surrounding area, as well as from the rest of Portugal. Particularly popular are hand-embroidered linens, towels and handkerchiefs, as well as hand-painted ceramics. Expensive antique and home furnishings stores can also be found in and around the town center. 

Sintra and the surrounding area has some of Portugal＊s finest hotels, ranging from luxurious country lodges where Lord Byron wrote some of his best works; to small and cozy bed and breakfasts. Lawrence＊s Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Portugal founded in 1760 by an eccentric English innkeeper and offers not only luxury accommodation but a gourmet restaurant as well. Past guests of the hotel include President Clinton and the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair 每 and of course, Byron, who frequented every hotel in town, it seems.

Sintra is not big on nightlife, nor does it have the hustle and bustle or big city feel of nearby Lisbon. But as a place to just relax and recharge your batteries, amidst some beautiful scenery, it is worth a visit.
