San Jose, California has quite a variety of attractions to stimulate the interests of families, couples, friends, and conventioneers. Public Transportation from The Mineta International Airport in San Jose is efficient, especially to the downtown and surrounding ¡°Silicon Valley¡± towns. For visitors who wish to spend a week or two, renting a car at the airport may provide even more options for a fabulous stay.
The Downtown area is the most convenient for public transit use. Many attractions are in walking distance from each other and a variety of shuttles abounds to rest weary feet. Guadalupe River Park and Gardens includes a wonderful attraction for board-game lovers. ¡°Monopoly in the park¡± is a 930-foot Monopoly board complete with all the pieces. You can rent the giant board game for group or family use, or you can park yourself on a bench and watch the fun. A stroll through the park will bring you to the San Jose Performing Arts Center, commonly referred to as the giant pumpkin. Depending on the season, you can take in a matinee Musical or Ballet performance. There are plenty of restaurants nearby to round off your day. If Musicals or Monopoly does not do it for you, the Children¡¯s Discovery Museum is a short walk across the street. It is a fun attraction for the young and the young-at-heart. The Discovery Meadows adds a great place to run off energy or relax and picnic in the sun. Further down the street is the Plaza de Cesar Chavez, where something is always going on.
Depending on the day and season, there are farmer¡¯s markets, live music, crafts markets, celebrations. Across from the plaza, you will find the Tech Museum of Innovation. This is fun for the young or older of heart and inspires the creative and curious through marvelous surprises. Further on down a couple of blocks is the San Jose Museum of Art. This is a free-admission activity, a great follow-up to the Tech Museum and truly makes for a mind-expanding day. If you have had the blues for too long, or felt like you are in a slump, this is where to go to refresh your inner thoughts and revive the ¡°what if¡± in you.
There are quiet a few live theaters in this area including the San Jose Reparatory Theater and the Montgomery Theater. You have a wide range of plays and cultural performances all in close proximity of each other.
I personally like to round out a day like this at Original Joe¡¯s at the corner of East San Carlos and South First Street and close to the Plaza de Cesar Chavez. For a free show, get counter seating in front of the skillet cooks. You will be thoroughly entertained watching the artistry of flipping mushrooms over wine lapping flames, and betting on whether anything ends up on the floor. After a day at the Tech Innovation and Museum of Art, you will go home with the boldness of trying to flip a skillet over your own stove and laughing at what does end up on your floor!
For long-term vacationers, there is the Paramount Great America Amusement Park on the Northern edge of San Jose and Raging Waters toward the Southeast. On the Westside of town are The San Jose Mystery House and an afternoon of shopping at Santana Row. Consider a day each for these excursions. You may also want to explore the rest of ¡°Silicon Valley¡± or rent a car and drive south to enjoy a day in the Redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, or play at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. An extra day or two in the San Jose area, can give way to a trip on the Bay Area Rapid Transit to San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley.
Whether you are visiting San Jose for a day, weekend, or longer, there will be plenty to do in a climate that is quite mild year round.
