In "reel" life, it is the land of sweeping romance and dashing heroes. In real life, one may not find a Humphrey Bogart gracing every bar, but that does not detract from the appeal of Casablanca, Morocco. The French background lends this modern city with a certain small-town charm, as if this nostalgic atmosphere is the heart of Casablanca¡¯s big-city existence.
Before we stroll into the ¡°Old Town¡± which is most reminiscent of the Casablanca of the cinema, let us pay tribute to some of the more traditional tourist attractions. Our journey begins at the Place de Nations Unies, a local landmark where modernism and historicism meet. From this landmark, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the modern white buildings dotted in between the unique cafes and shopping centers. Among our modern-era must-see destinations are the Casablanca Twin Center, Boulevard Moulnay Youssef, Boulevard Anfa, and the beautiful French colonial architecture lining Boulevard Boigny. Shop until your heart¡¯s content at the numerous shops which call La Nouvelle Medina (the new city) home. Then, if you desire a glimpse of this country¡¯s rich Arabic heritage, then stroll into the Central Post Office Building or City Hall, where you will lay eyes upon some of the finest Arab mosaic art and Islamic architecture in the world.
Of course, the true religious scholar will immediately be swept away by the truly ¡°La Grande¡± structure rising gloriously from the city¡¯s heart. Modestly placed on a patchwork of clear green lawn, the Hassan II Mosque is anything but modest. Built in 1980, this ornate capsule of the Islamic faith is large enough to swallow Notre Dame a few times over. The massive and majestic gathering place can welcome over 25,000 people at any given time, and its laser lights always shine toward its guiding light, the holy city of Mecca. Weary sailors are enraptured by this inspiring spectacle (one of the largest mosques in the world) from miles away. In fact, the sea surrounds this structure on three sides, providing it with an eternal protection. On the other side, a fountain invites guests like a welcoming hand. Within this holy structure, all faiths are welcome. Once inside, you will marvel at the elaborate pattern of stone and marble floors, plaster molding, and exquisitely painted wood ceilings which are the fruits of a five-year labor of love. For those desiring a quieter and less ambitious religious experience, the Cathedrale Sacre Coeur and the White Mosque are smaller but no less memorable destinations.
Now, if you are tiring from your religious pilgrimages, the Parc de la Arabe is an ideal location to kick off your shoes and have some fun. This park, tucked amidst the busy seaside ports, offers just the right hint of a tropical atmosphere, with its palm trees and magnificent gardens of sprawling beauty. The park is a perfect family rest-stop for coffee, amusement park rides, and simple strolls.
Once you have rested your weary feet, it is time to enter that enchanted land of sleepy shops and friendly faces. Our journey has taken us full-circle, back to the Place de Nation Unies. We follow this unassuming landmark until we are greeted by a smiling young boy. One of many such guides, the boy introduces himself and leads us into the ¡°Old City.¡± A more fitting name never existed, for as we step into the Medina, it is like stepping back in time. We rub our eyes, as our sight attempts to adjust from the sprawling buildings of La Nouvelle to the tiny, carefully crafted homes of this ¡°Old City.¡± Our eyes, try as they might, find no alleys or dark corners. Every ounce of beauty is before us, ripe for viewing. Our young guide captures our attention, asking if he may take us to his brother¡¯s shop. Along the way, we pass a hodge-podge of artistic talents¡ªleather, ornate carpet work, hand-crafted jewelry, singers and storytellers each competing for our attention¡living history. Finally, we arrive at a souk, where mazes of shops boast every bargain and keepsake imaginable. An hour later, as we emerge from the maze (our shopping sacks full and our hearts even fuller), we spot a dimly lit bar tucked in the corner. The cozy atmosphere embraces us as we approach. As we enter the doors of the Casablanca Bar, our ears attune to the soothing sound of a pianist tickling the ivories with a familiar tune. Dappily dressed waiters mill about the hazy room, and in the distance we see a figure lazily reclining against the staircase, a faint smile of approval tracing his lips. He looks just like¡We dismiss the thought with a smile and a shrug as we join the festivities, and step back in time.
