Over 1200 years ago, a band of Norsemen built a small settlement at the top of a fjord in Norway.  In the centuries since then, the little village became a center for shipbuilding, agriculture and commerce, and eventually evolved into the thriving capital city of Oslo.  Located between the fjord and a rich forested region, Oslo offers something for everyone.

Much like the Vikings who once settled the land, Oslo has a history of being sturdy and resilient through the centuries.  Despite losing half the city¡¯s population to plague in the 1300¡¯s, and then being almost completely destroyed by fire three hundred years later, Oslo has always come back, and today is one of Scandinavia¡¯s most popular tourist destinations.

Norway is known as the land of the Midnight Sun, and to take advantage of the endless daylight, visit during the May ¨C July period.  Stores and museums are all open later during the summer months, and there are significantly more options for transportation this time of year.

If you are able to travel to Oslo in May, try to plan your trip so that you can witness the annual Syttende Mai festival on May 17th.  This is Norway¡¯s Constitution Day, and the residents turn out in full national regalia, waving flags in the streets.

Any visit to Oslo, still known as the Viking capital, absolutely has to include a trip to the Viking Ship Museum, or Vikingskiphuset.  The three ships on display, the Gokstad, Tune, and Oseberg, in the museum date back to about 800 a.d., and were used as burial vessels for royal remains.  The museum is also home to a number of Viking artifacts and art, such as tools, household goods and ceremonial sleighs.

Continue exploring Oslo¡¯s extensive seafaring history with a visit to something a bit more contemporary, the Kon-Tiki Museum.  In 1947, scientist Thor Heyerdahl set out to sail across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia on a balsa-log raft, stopping along the way to collect artifacts from Easter Island and the Galapagos.  Heyerdahl¡¯s raft, as well as his papyrus boat, the Ra II, is on display at the Kon-Tiki Museum, and visitors can play with the interactive CD-ROM facilities.

A highlight of not only Oslo but the entire country is the Vigeland Sculpture Park, which contains over 600 full-size works of art in bronze, granite and iron.  Even more intriguing than the pieces themselves is the fact that artist Gustav Vigeland modeled all of them himself, without any assistance from other artists.  Be sure to look for the Monolith, a 14-meter high column carved from a single block of stone, which contains over a hundred human figures ascending in a spiral. The Monolith itself is surrounded by three dozen groups of statues which represent the cycle of life.

Travel to Akershus Castle for a visit to the Resistance Museum, which commemorates the Norwegian patriots shot by Nazi soldiers during World War II.  A somber reminder of Norway¡¯s defiant history, the museum and adjoining memorial was created to give future generations a glimpse of what life was like under an oppressive foreign rule.  The castle itself was used as a prison during the Occupation, and includes dungeons and elaborate banquet halls, and even the burial crypts of former rulers King H?kon VII and Olav V.  

Once you¡¯ve had your fill of Oslo¡¯s magnificent museums and historical sights, be sure to see one of the region's most popular attractions, the Holmenkollen Ski Jump.  More than a million visitors come to Holmenkollen each year, and it¡¯s easy to see why.  The ski jump tower is located 60 meters above the ground and 417 meters above sea level, and offers a breathtaking view of Oslo and the entire fjord.  Camping is available in the nearby Nordmarka forest area, and several resorts, hotels and conference centers surround the Holmenkollen.  Check hours and rates for tours of the ski jump area, because it tends to vary by season.

If you happen to be in Oslo during the winter, several companies provide tours of the city by sleigh and carriage, and Norske Sledehundturer offers a jaunt by dogsled through the Oslomarka, which is the forested region around the city.

One of the benefits of being located on the fjord is that Oslo is able to offer visitors some spectacular excursions from the water.  The Skibladner is the world¡¯s oldest surviving paddle steamer. First launched in 1856, she travels Lake Mj?sa regularly from June through August.  Make a point of checking the dates and times for Skilbladner¡¯s Jazz Evenings, which features live Dixieland music and dinner on deck.  

         Several charter companies, including one which has replicas of Viking sailing vessels, offer boat tours through the fjord during the summer months, so check with your hotel to see which ones are offering discounted rates.  If you¡¯re traveling as part of a package deal, you may be able to get a substantial discount.

        Look into getting an Oslo Pass, if you¡¯re going to be there for a few days.  This ticket allows you free travel on all public transportation, as well as reduced or free admission to many of the sights and attractions within the city, and even discounts on car rental and parking.  

If seeing Oslo from land and sea isn¡¯t adventurous enough for you, head on out to the Gardermoen Airstrip, and charter a ride with Pegasus Helicopters.  The view of Oslo and the fjord from up in the air is stunning, and simply unparalleled.  

All year long, this amazing city plays host to countless symphonies, plays, festivals and other activities.  From the Oslo Concert Hall, featuring the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, to the Valle Hovin Arena, home to major rock concerts such as U2 and Bruce Springsteen, there¡¯s always some form of entertainment and excitement happening in Oslo.  When you¡¯re planning your trip, make a point of figuring out ahead of time which events are taking place, because Oslo is a city that hardly ever sleeps.
