Birmingham has long been known as the Magic City of the South, and it attracts a wide variety of tourists from all over the world. Birmingham offers a broad selection of attractions suitable for everyone¡¯s interests.

The South is rich in history, and Birmingham is home to a great deal of it. Some of the most famous history in Birmingham includes events during the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. These events and the lives of those who were a part of them are chronicled at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. This historic museum follows the events that changed American history, including the Jim Crow laws of the 1800s and the civil rights demonstrations held in the 1960s.

If music is your passion, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame is located in Birmingham. This museum is devoted to the appreciation of jazz and the unique people who have been a part of it. Here you will find stories of the lives and accomplishments of more than 170 jazz musicians native to Alabama. These musicians include the famed Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington.

Birmingham has attractions for nature lovers as well. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens offer everything from beautiful architecture and artwork, to an enchanting labyrinth of roses and a Zen garden. This peaceful attraction also offers lectures and hands-on classes, as well as the Gatehouse Gift Shop for those who would like to take home a unique souvenir. Another attraction for those who appreciate nature is the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. This 1,000-acre park is located in downtown Birmingham. Here you can enjoy 11 miles of hiking and walking trails, a nature center that houses animals native to the area, picnics, gardens, and a gift shop. Also available for the romantic are sunset strolls with wine and cheese, and even musical moonlight walks.

The Southern Museum of Flight displays historic aviation memorabilia from the early days of flight. On display at this museum are military, civilian, and even home-built aircraft. Displayed here are a full-size replica of the Wright Flyer, one of Delta Air Line¡¯s first planes, and two fighter jet cockpit simulators. This museum includes pictorial exhibits of Alabama¡¯s aviation history, including historic images of the Tuskegee Airmen. The Model Gallery displays airplane models in cases and suspended from above, as well as an eleven-foot model of the World War II aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise.

For a little family fun, try the Birmingham Zoo. This nonprofit organization houses approximately 750 animals of 250 species from six continents, including several endangered species. Here you will also find a Komodo Dragon exhibit and an interactive lorikeet aviary. Another family-oriented attraction is the McWane Center. This science complex includes an IMAX dome theater and hands-on science fun for children of all ages. Explore the thrill of a tightrope ride without the danger on the HighCycle, and see creatures from all over the world at the World of Water exhibit.

Birmingham is also home to a bronze replica of the Statue of Liberty that is one fifth of the size of the original statue in New York City. This statue was cast in France in 1956 and is located in Liberty Park. The statue¡¯s flame burns continuously, and is lighted for viewing at night. Another interesting attraction in Birmingham is Vulcan Park, home to the 100-year-old Vulcan Statue. This incredible iron statue has a torch that glows green when there have been no traffic-related deaths, and glows red when the city suffers a traffic fatality.
