The Museum of the New South is a historical museum that documents the transformation of Charlotte after the Civil War. Here you will find the 8,000-foot permanent exhibit of Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers: Charlotte and the Carolina Piedmont in the New South. This museum houses interactive multimedia exhibits of regional scenes that recreate historical lives and events. Local authors and historians help bring to life lectures and storytelling sessions that are offered by the museum.
The Charlotte Museum of History also brings to life historical times for visitors. The 18th Century Gallery of this museum takes you through the history of the Native Americans that originally called the Piedmont home, the European settlers that migrated from the northern colonies, and the American Revolution. The 19th Century Gallery presents the impact of slavery and the Industrial Revolution in the Charlotte area. In the 20th Century Gallery you will find the history of the social and religious struggles in Charlotte as the area developed into a thriving community of citizens from many backgrounds.
The Charlotte Museum of History also offers to visitors the historic homesite of Hezekiah Alexander, Revolutionary politician and magistrate. Docents in 18th century costume will guide you through this completely restored colonial home. Also on the museum grounds is the American Freedom Bell, a symbol of the patriotic heritage of Charlotte.
