Mazatlan is one of Mexico¡¯s oldest resorts and its second largest coastal city.  Bordered by the Sierra Madre Mountains, it is closer to Texas than Acapulco and is 745 miles south of Arizona.  It has seventeen miles of sandy beaches and is Mexico¡¯s lengthiest and prettiest palm-lined waterfront promenade, which connects the Golden Zone with Old Mazatlan.  It has a population of about 600,000 people and hosts around 500,000 tourists yearly.  

Known for its beaches and sport fishing, Mazatlan is part of the Mexican Riviera and is frequently visited by several cruise ship lines, especially those on their way to Alaska.  It first established its reputation as a vacation destination in the 1950s (Cancun was just a strip of sand), but the first tourist fishing expeditions occurred in the 1940s.  It is home to the biggest fleet of commercial shrimp vessels in Latin America and is called the shrimp capital of the world.  

A nice vacation destination either for families or for romantic getaways for two, Mazatlan has something to offer everyone, at an affordable price, with all the comforts of home.  Portable appliances from the United States and Canada (hair dryer, iron, electric toothbrush, etc.) will work here; the electricity is 110 volts, 60 cycles, same as in the United States, differing only in that most of the outlets have only two prongs.  Bring an adaptor if your appliance needs a third ground wire, but two-pronged plugs will work just fine.  Visitors from Europe or any country that uses 220 volts need to bring the appropriate adaptors.  

Below are suggestions of things to do when you visit Mazatlan:  

Beaches 

Many good beaches exist in Mazatlan where you can do anything from sunbathe to surf.  Waves are best for surfing at Los Pinos, which surfers call ¡°the Cannon.¡±  For a more sedate experience, you can take a five-minute motorboat ride to Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island), where if you walk through the village to the ocean side, you¡¯ll be rewarded with  coconut-grove-bordered, pale-sand beaches that stretch for miles.  

Cliff Divers 

Divers soar from El Mirador¡¯s cliffs forty-five feet into six feet of water.  Shows are presented several times daily and at night with torches.  

Cycling 

Nestled among the panoramic views and the scenic hillsides of Mazatlan are many trails and valleys to challenge mountain bikers of all skill levels.  

El Fero Lighthouse 

For a spectacular view of the city from 500 feet above sea level, this is the highest working lighthouse in the world.  A sizable collection of wildlife can be observed here, as well.  

Fishing 

Mazatlan has a successful ¡°catch and release¡± program, which helps to maintain populations of game fish such as marlin, swordfish, and sailfish.  This area is where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet.  

Golf 

Scenic courses each have their own design, but all are eye-pleasing.  Most are nine-holes, which can be combined for eighteen, but there is one eighteen-hole course that was designed by Lee Trevino.  

Horseback Riding 

Horseback Riding on the beach is illegal in the Golden Zone; but you can participate in this activity on Stone Island, a relaxing spot where you¡¯ll find little other than beaches, coconut trees, and open-air restaurants.  

Parasailing

Not for the acrophobic among us, or to be attempted in a high wind, parasailing can be a fantastic experience in Mazatlan.  For about $25-$30, the ten-minute ride provides a terrific view of all of Mazatlan.  Make sure the boat has two people in it and not just one so that one of the occupants will serve as a spotter to keep an eye on you while you¡¯re airborne.  

Sailing 

Your local marina will have everything you need if you want to Jet-Ski or go for a Banana boat ride, parasailing, boating or sailing.  

Scuba Diving/Snorkeling 

Offshore areas of Isla de Venandos and Isla de los Chivos provide a spectacular display of thousands of brightly colored fish.  Some unusual rock formations lie just offshore and make for an interesting afternoon of undersea exploration.  Most places that offer water sport equipment can also provide scuba diving and snorkeling equipment as well as excursions.  

Shopping 

Hundreds of shops beckon when you get the urge to part with your hard-earned money, and the vendors in Mazatlan are there to help you.  They expect you to haggle over just about everything, but they¡¯ll also be more than happy to keep the inflated amount that you paid for an item if that¡¯s your choice.  

You can buy Cuban cigars and take them back with you to Canada but not to the United States.  Please remember this if you¡¯re on an extended driving trip and you must pass through the United States.  Cuban cigars are expensive; be careful of counterfeits.  

Tennis  

Although there are more than 100 tennis courts in Mazatlan, hotel guests have priority; but you can still check for availability.  Since there are so many other activities to pursue, you might get lucky and be able to reserve a court.  

Water Sports 

You can obtain just about any piece of water sport equipment that you want from your hotel, including Hobie Cats and windsurfers.  

This just gives you an idea of the diverse activities available to enhance your vacation experience in Mazatlan.  Not listed here but equally entertaining are an art gallery, an aquarium, an opera house, Old Mazatlan, clubs, jungle tours, and a multitude of restaurants.  Food centers around seafood, especially shrimp, and is plentiful and cheap.  

Safety (Mexico in General)  

Mexico is a high crime area.  Use only authorized taxis.  Do not display wealth (flashy jewelry, large sums of money).  Stay alert and watchful when using public transport and while at stations and tourist sites.  

Lone women need to be especially vigilant; serious assaults have been committed in tourist areas.  

Draw money from cash machines and exchange money in daylight hours, preferably during business hours.  Do not let anyone observe you entering your PIN number at an ATM, no matter how innocent (or young) they appear to be.  Be aware of your surroundings as you leave these areas with cash.  

Ask for identification from anyone who presents himself as a police officer if he¡¯s attempting to arrest or fine you for no obvious reason.  Bogus officers have led to thefts and assaults.  

You cannot bring guns or ammunition into Mexico; it¡¯s illegal.  You can get up to five years in a Mexican prison for the possession of a single bullet or weapon.  A tourist who is caught with a firearm and hasn¡¯t confessed to possessing one will be ineligible for bail and treated as an arms smuggler.  

Don¡¯t forget your sun screen and comfortable walking shoes, be safe, and have fun.
