Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and has everything you would want as a tourist: places to shop, more places to shop, and some of the most exquisite art work and architecture you will find anywhere.

One of the most unique "shopping centers" of Europe is Florence's Ponte Vecchio.  The Ponte Vecchio, or Old Bridge, was first built in the ninth century, rebuilt after a flood in 1333 and again rebuilt after another devastating flood in 1966.  The bridge is quite an attraction by itself and one of the most memorable views in the city.  But as you walk across it, you can enjoy the small boutiques selling jewelry, leather, ceramics, and other goods that will make it hard to pass up.

Handcrafted leather and Florence go together in the annals of quality craftsmanship.  There are many places in the city where you can find leather goods of the finest quality but one of the most pleasant is the Leather School in the Basilica Santa Croce.  You can sometimes get a really good deal here as you sample the work of the school's students.

If you're going to the Leather School, though, you might want to take your time and enjoy the Basilica itself.  Renowned for a large selection of frescoes by the famous artist and architect, Giotto, the church is a breathtaking example of Florentine Renaissance art.  Like the Ponte Vecchio, it's the perfect combination of "shop til you drop" and enjoying the best of Italian culture.

A walking tour of Florence will take you past a history of Italian Renaissance art.  The centerpiece of the city's history is the Duomo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.  Begun in 1296 and completed by Brunelleschi in 1436, its cupola is a feat of engineering and one of the most recognized sights in Florence.  Inside are frescoes of Paolo Uccello and Luca della Robbia.  

Right next to the Duomo is Giotto's Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its famous bronze doors.  If you're lucky enough to visit Florence during the Easter season, you'll find this area around the Duomo the center of the city's holiday festivities.

A walk over to Florence's City Hall is also a walk through Renaissance art and culture.  The Palazzo Vecchio was begun in 1299 and was built to defend the city from its enemies.  Both inside and outside the building are areas of interest for tourists.  Inside you'll find the Salone dei Cinquecento and the office of Francesco I.  

But outside is the real treasure.  The Piazza della Signoria is surrounded by sculpture by Cellini and Giambologna.  There is also a plaque in the plaza commemorating the killing of the fifteenth century preacher Savonarola.  He preached against Florence's political leaders and was killed in the piazza after weeks of torture inside the building.

If you are interested in a more traditional museum, Florence will not disappoint you either.  The Uffizi Gallery, built in 1581, has works of art of Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Boticelli, Michelangelo as well as Rembrandt, Durer and Goya.

Finally don't forget the Pitti Palace.  Begun in 1458, it's been an important part of the political life of the city, including being the capital building of the newly unified Italy when, for a short period of time, Florence was the capital of the country in the 19th century.  Today it has one of the most important collections of art in Italy - and that's saying quite a bit.

Enjoy walking the streets of Florence.  Stop at street corners and read the plaques telling of high tides during floods and commemorating the deaths of twentieth-century anti-fascist resistance fighters.  It's a city full of life and history and well worth the visit.
