Oakland, California has many great attractions and activities to fill the need of any vacationer, and you can wear your summertime shorts!  Oakland has its own International Airport, conveniently located near the Oakland Coliseum and easily accessible by public transportation.  Oakland¡¯s huge variety of accommodations allows you a much greater choice of vacation ideas. 

You might consider a few days of lakeside camping.  Imagine yourself unwinding while sunbathing, fishing, or boating in Anthony Chabot Regional Area.  You and your family can choose to take in stunning vistas hiking the trails or participating on a guided horse back ride throughout the 4,000-plus acres of rolling hills and rugged canyons.  Maybe you wave to the kids as they paddleboat on the lake while you go to the Chabot Golf Course, score your pars and enjoy panoramic views of the entire San Francisco Bay.

 In the evening you can sit by the campfire or hop on public transit for a night on the town. Oakland has great evening activities with a wonderful array of restaurants, jazzy nightclubs, and even the closest view of stars in the west.  Chabot Park Space Center¡¯s 20¡± telescope is the largest refractor in the entire Western United States.

And, should you so desire, you can look across the bay, determine if it¡¯s clear enough in San Francisco and ride the BART for an afternoon or evening in the ¡°other¡± city by the bay.

If camping isn¡¯t your thing, or a little camping is quite enough, you can choose room service in a luxury hotel by the bay.  Popular hotels string through the downtown area, along the Waterfront, in famous Jack London Square or out by the Oakland Coliseum for sports fans.

If a few days of camping sounds a bit much, but you like the ¡°lake idea¡±, a day at Lake Merritt may suit you just fine.  You can start with a boating excursion of your choice.  Would you like a romantic Gondola ride or do you prefer sailing?  Picnicking on the sun warmed grass will await your return to land.  After lunch, take a stroll through the peaceful and enchanting Bonsai Gardens, feed the coy, or sit on a secluded bench and watch the waterfalls.  Rest, Recreation, and fun in the sun! 

Oakland has several surprising art museums.  For the budding artists in your family, take in the MOCA (Museum of Children¡¯s Art).  You will truly marvel at what you see.  The Oakland Museum boasts a large collection of early California Art, complete with original oil paintings of the bay area before and during the 49er Gold Boom.  The African American Museum is a must and a tour or cruise on FDR¡¯s Presidential Yacht is a hoot!  And, if 19th century architecture is of interest to you, Preservation Park is an amazing stroll through restored homes of that period. 

When you have seen enough of art and culture, take in a ball game at the Coliseum.  As with most everything else in Oakland, it is easily accessible using public transportation, and is a lot warmer than San Francisco¡¯s ball park.

If you are up for some shopping, Jack London Square is a charming and picturesque area on the waterfront.  During the weekends you can also meander along the square and browse the outdoor Artisan Market while listening to local musicians.
