The capital of Kenya, Nairobi is completely modern, with all the comforts of home. This city is a bustling metropolis, with public transportation ¨C buses, taxis, and matatus (mini-buses) ¨C readily available. The traveler should remain wary of going out at night and always be aware of your surroundings, as pick-pocketing and other nuisance crimes abound.
Nairobi is well-known as the gateway to safari heaven: many safari tours convene here before moving on to the bush. But there are lots of fun things to do in and around the capital. Here are the top destinations:
Nairobi National Park
Do you fancy a safe brush with the wildlife of east Africa? You can see all sorts of wildlife, with the background of modern high-rise buildings in the background. The wildlife includes giraffes, impalas, lions, leopards, and rhinos (no elephants). You can only go into the park via car, so you either book a tour in advance (check at the front desk of your hotel), or rent a car.
David Sheldrick Animal Trust
If you want to see baby elephants up close, then a visit to this Animal Trust is a must. Elephant handlers who must be specially trained have saved over 50 newborn infant elephants. The Trust also saves baby rhinos. These are orphaned babies, who sometimes lose their parents to the violent trade of poachers.
Giraffe Centre
Only 8 miles from the center of Nairobi and very near the Karen Blixen Museum, the giraffe center allows visitors to get close and personal with a perennial favorite. Geared toward educating kids and adults, you can feed the giraffe right from your hand, and learn about the world¡¯s tallest animal! You may also hear the Giraffe Centre referred to as is the Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife Giraffe Centre, AFEW Giraffe Centre, or the Langata Giraffe Centre.
Kenya National Museum
Kenya has a rich flora and fauna. The National Museum was founded in 1910, initially with a focus on the real focus is on the habitat. Now, however, you will also find displays of tribal artifacts, Asian-Africans, and other images of Kenyans and East Africans. The exhibitions also include fossils, and a bird gallery with more than 900 stuffed and mounted specimens. The museum is open daily, including holidays, from 9AM to 6 PM.
National Archives
The National Archives is the place to visit to seem Kenyan handicrafts and paintings. You can also see historical photographs of former predient Daniel Arap Moi, and Mzee Kenyatta, first president of Kenya.
The Bomas of Kenya
In addition to the National Archives, you can experience Kenyan culture at the Bomas of Kenya, conveniently located just down the road from Nairobi National Park. Bomas, or traditional homesteads, are on display here. You can also watch daily shows of traditional dances and listen to songs from Kenya¡¯s ethnic groups.
Karen Blixen Museum
White settlers clearly left their mark on Kenya. Did you read Out of Africa? The farmhouse where author Karen Blixen lived between 1914 and 1931 is a museum. You can stroll the gardens, and view the lovely, well-preserved interior.
Traditional Markets
In addition to formal destinations already listed, be sure to visit the many traditional markets around town. Your best bet for finding these is to inquire at the front desk of your hotel. Be prepared to pay inflated prices (over prices offered to Kenyans), but realize that you may not be this way again, and enjoy your purchases. Visitors should also keep their possessions well-guarded, as like any big city area that attracts tourists, human parasites abound.
