Tourists will find a visit to the city of Newark, NJ to be a most culturally pleasant experience. As the third oldest U.S. city, Newark offers a potpourri of activities including fine cultural arts, excellent ethnic cuisines, and a rich choice of recreational activities. While in town, plan a day to explore and enjoy some of these attractions.

The Newark Museum, an eighty-gallery museum, is one of the nation¡¯s finest art centers. Showcased within this vast complex are several collections, including decorative arts from Africa, Asia, and The Pacific. There is also a planetarium and a mini-zoo with over one hundred animals. Adjacently connected and also belonging to the museum is the Ballentine House, a lavish Victorian mansion that once belonged to the famous beer brewer. 

For contemporary Art, you may want to head over to Aljira, an art gallery designed to promote the works of modern local artists. There are monthly art exhibits and auctions. Another unique gallery is The Art Gallery located on Halsey Street where the works of many regional and international artists can be purchased.

The Cathedral Basilica is another ¡°don¡¯t miss¡± sight that should top your list of places to see while in Newark. This beautiful French Gothic style church is similar in size to the famous Westminster Abbey. Over two hundred stained-glass windows beautify both the church¡¯s interior and exterior.

Add some music to your scheduled repertoire with a visit to Symphony Hall. Here in this grand music hall built in the 1920¡¯s, you can catch a concert, or view a theatrical performance at the NJ Performing Arts Center. This fairly new structure opened in 1997 and offers a large range of spectacular shows featuring world-renowned entertainers. 

To see a famous city landmark, head on over to the Eagles Riverfront Stadium and catch a baseball game. Be sure to root for the Newark Bears, the city¡¯s hometown professional baseball team. Then take a stroll through Branch Brook Park. If you¡¯re lucky enough to be visiting during the month of April, the exquisitely blooming cherry blossoms will enchant you. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the running trails and ball fields. 

At Liberty State Park, you can find more recreational facilities, including fishing and swimming. The Liberty Science Center is located here also. With its many interactive exhibits, this is a great place, especially for kids, to learn more about science and 

technology. In contrast, Military Park is rich with historical statues. Here you can see a bust of John F. Kennedy, as well as other significant memorabilia, including the Wars of America monument. 

You can catch the latest movie at the Sony Theatres Metroplex of Newark. With state of the art surround sound, six screens, and over one hundred seats in each theatre, you¡¯re bound to have a great viewing.

Finally, complete the day with some fine dining in the Ironbound District, located in the heart of downtown Newark. Gourmet Portuguese and Spanish cuisine awaits you in restaurants like the ever-popular Fornos of Spain or Taste of Portugal.
