Often regarded as the birthplace of the blues, Memphis, Tennessee is the true cultural jewel of the Mississippi delta.  Nestled conveniently between the hot and spicy city of New Orleans to the south and its windy city cousin Chicago to the north, Memphis is a lively metropolis that has managed to maintain its own unique southern charm and rich heritage. It was originally named after Memphis, Egypt similarly located just above the summit of a great river delta on the other side of the globe.  

The city of Memphis, Tennessee was officially founded in 1819.  Located in the middle of the ¡°Sun Belt¡± it has a wonderful climate with average temperatures in the mid 80s during the summer and mid 60s during most of the rest of the year.  Not even Miami averages more sunny days each year!  The natural scenery is gorgeous, particularly in fall.  If you are looking for a vacation destination that¡¯s boasts beautiful sunsets, plenty of excitement and fun for the whole family, this is the place.

There are a few spots you don¡¯t want to miss.  Be sure to make these a part of your trip itinerary:

1)  Beale Street Historic District.  203 Beale Street.  Memphis, TN  38103

Memphis is the blues Mecca of the south.  Musical legends such as W. C. Handy and B.B. King have helped establish the rich lineage of traditional blues, rhythm and blues and blues infused jazz that have made this spot famous.  The district is located in downtown Memphis.  You can check out the Walk of Fame where numerous great musicians are honored.  Nightclubs and southern restaurants abound and promise a lip-smacking, head-bopping good time.  Visit Beale Street¡¯s very own A. Schwab¡¯s Dry Goods Store, which dates back to 1876 and carries a wide variety of souvenirs, memorabilia and southern novelty items.  On any night of the week you will find fun and excitement on Beale Street, but particularly on Saturday nights when B.B. King¡¯s blues club starts rocking or Elvis Presley¡¯s voice spills into the air from the Hard Rock Caf¨¦.  Or you can stop by the historic Sun Studio (opened in 1950) where many musical giants recorded such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Rufus Thomas, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, only to name a few.  If you love Cajun cuisine or great B-B-Q you are in for a treat.  Any number of establishments offers these items on their menu plus a whole lot more.

2)  Mud Island River Park.    125 North Front Street.  Memphis, TN 38103.

Located in downtown Memphis, Mud Island explores all the historical, cultural and educational aspects of the mighty Mississippi River.  It features an 18-gallery Mississippi River Museum teeming with legend and folklore as well as information about river life.  You can also take part in the free Mississippi River Walk or ride one of the many riverboats.   Tour the Memphis Belle Pavilion which is World War II¡¯s most famous B-17 bomber.  You can also take a dip in the swimming pool or at the beach, enjoy a nice meal at any number of restaurants or explore the gift shops.  Mud Island is open April-October.

3)  Graceland.  3734 Elvis Presley Boulevard.  Memphis, TN 38116

Visit Elvis¡¯ sprawling estate located just 15 minutes from the downtown Memphis area.  For a $20 entry fee, visitors learn a great deal about how the superstar lived and hear all the interesting details of his life and legacy.  See Elvis¡¯ costume and jewelry collection, as well as the memorial site of the Presley family, the Meditation garden.  The tour also includes his jet airplanes (one named ¡°Lisa Marie¡±) and famous 1955 pink Cadillac, as well as his collection of other fine cars and motorcycles.  A once exclusive neighborhood, the boulevard is now a shrine to the iconic Rock-and-Roll star so Elvis enthusiasts will have a great time visiting the dozens of souvenir shops and movie theaters (featuring only Elvis flicks of course).  Have your picture taken at the infamous Graceland gates and don¡¯t forget to sign the wall!

4)  National Civil Rights Museum.  450 Mulberry Street.  Memphis, TN  38103

The site of the Lorraine Motel, where civil rights crusader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was slain, has been converted into a civil rights museum and dedicated in memoriam of his legacy and the valiant efforts of many other great leaders.  This will make a poignant and reflective stop on your tour of the city, a reminder of a not so distant past in American culture.  Exhibits, interactive displays and individual and group tours are offered year round.  Learn more about the American Civil Rights Movement and how it shaped history.

5)  The Pyramid.  One Auction Avenue.  Memphis, TN  38105

Anyone visiting Memphis in recent years has gasped in awe of its stunning 32-story stainless steel tribute to its Egyptian namesake.  The Pyramid is a 22,500 seat, multi-purpose arena located on the banks of the Mississippi.  Those driving in the from the north from Arkansas will most likely cross the lighted Memphis city bridge and find it hard to keep their eyes on the road!  A wide variety of events take place at the Pyramid year round including major basketball games, music concerts, high school graduations and competitions and much, much more.  There is also a ground level mini-museum featuring Egyptian artifacts and souvenirs.

6)  Children¡¯s Museum of Memphis.  2525 Central Avenue  Memphis, TN 38104

For family friendly fun, visit this wonderful museum designed specifically with children in mind.  There is a world of discovery awaiting them, including a child-sized city and interactive exhibits.  Watch them use their imagination while climbing aboard a real life police motorcycle or shopping for groceries in a miniature grocery store.  The museum is open each day except Mondays.  Adult chaperons are admitted free.

7)  Memphis Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium.  3050 Central Ave.  Memphis, TN  38112

The Pink Palace Museum includes a wide variety of natural and cultural history exhibits, a spectacular planetarium and its very own IMAX Theater featuring new films every four months.  Permanent exhibits include 70 million year old sea life fossils from the area as well as a wide variety of other dinosaur fossils and mineral collections.  See replicas of the original ¡°Piggly Wiggly¡± grocery store, the first self-service grocery store in the nation.  The Planetarium not only takes visitors on an impressive journey through space and time, but also regularly presents special laser light shows, including one featuring Elvis during the month of August.

8)  Libertyland.  940 Early Maxwell Boulevard.  Memphis, TN  38104

For the ultimate adventure, stop in at Memphis¡¯ amusement park.  It features 23 spine tingling rides, live theater shows, carnival and video game areas, great eating, gift shops and educational attractions.  Rides include a 1909 Dentzel Carousel, a Double Water Slide, the Kamikaze, the Sea Dragon, the Zippin Pippin and tons of kid rides.  Spring and summer are best for visiting.

9)  Memphis Botanic Garden.  750 Cherry Road.  Memphis, TN  38117

If you love flora and fauna, this tourist spot is for you.  The Memphis Botanic Garden features more than 96 acres of outdoor gardens.  Featured are a Japanese Garden of Tranquility, as well as Sensory, Sculpture, Azalea, Four Seasons, and Wildflower gardens (just to name a few).  There is a Goldsmith Civic Garden Center that showcases horticultural shows, art exhibitions and an extensive plant information library.  If you need a special event facility this is the perfect place.  The Hardin Hall is a 5,500 square foot facility and makes a beautiful locale for weddings, receptions, seminars, corporate parties and the like.  The Botanic Garden is open year round with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year¡¯s Day.
