Multnomah Falls:

Located approximately thirty miles east of Portland, Multnomah Falls is the second highest waterfall in the United States that flows year-round.  The water plummets an astounding 620 feet before crashing into the pools below.  In the winter months the falls have been known to partially freeze, lending an air of magic and mystery.  Hike up to the midpoint and cross a suspension bridge, stopping to take pictures of this wonder with beautiful ferns, pine trees and rocky cliffs as your backdrop.

The Rose Festival:

Portland is known as ¡°The City of Roses,¡± and for good reason.  The climate is ideal for nourishing these time-honored flowers, and there is no shortage of prized roses located around the city.  The annual Rose Festival, held in the summer, showcases not only masses of these floral beauties, but has enough entertainment to satisfy the whole family.  Sit back and enjoy the Grand Floral Parade as it passes by; it has won numerous awards for its majestic floats.  Watch the exciting and unusual Dragon Boat races as the teams compete for top prizes, or try your hand at the vast amounts of carnival trinkets at the Pepsi Waterfront Village, packed with thrill rides and those distinct aromas of cotton candy and corn dogs that bring out the child in all of us. You can also view the Naval ships as they gather here during the Festival.

Visit a volcano:

That¡¯s right, a volcano.  Mount Saint Helens, in Washington State, is located about 50 miles north of Portland and is an active volcano.  In 1980 she exploded in a fiery eruption, spewing ashes for miles and killing at least sixty-five people.  In 2004 she began rumbling again and emitted a series of small earthquakes.  Visitors can view this unusual sight from an observatory on Johnson Ridge; it¡¯s recommended you check the status of the mountain for possible closures if she starts hiccupping again.

Scream a little at Oaks Amusement Park:

Oaks Park, one of America¡¯s oldest continuously running amusement parks, is located in a beautiful treed setting near the Willamette River with picnic facilities available.  Perfect for the entire family, Oaks offers a range of excitement from kiddy rides all the way up to thrill rides for the brave.  Carnival games are the ideal activity for taking a breather after that Tilt-A-Whirl spin.

Oaks Park is open weekends in the spring and every day in the summer. 

Stroll through The Enchanted Forest:

Not your average amusement park, The Enchanted Forest is a fairy tale come to life.  A short thirty-minute drive south of Portland is all it takes to enter another world.  Featuring such lands as ¡°Storybook Lane,¡± a Western town, a haunted house, an old European village and more, the younger set will be awestruck by everything there is to see and explore.  A few rides are also available such as a log ride and bumper cars, and don¡¯t miss the Fantasy Fountains, a dazzling display of ever-changing colored spray.

Stop and smell the roses:

The Portland Rose Garden is a rose lover¡¯s delight.  Open daily, the garden offers visitors a chance to see over 8,000 roses in so many varieties you¡¯ll have a hard time keeping them straight.  During the summer you¡¯ll find several events scheduled, such as contests, floral shows and exhibits.  This largest continuously operated rose test garden in the United States is open daily.

Float on by:

Take a cruise on the waterways of Portland with several companies to choose from.  Many offer relaxing dinner and sunset cruises with fine dining and wondrous views.  Enjoy soothing live music while taking a tour of Portland¡¯s rivers, narrated by Portland experts.

There are also ships that operate cruises up the famous Columbia Gorge, where you can view amazing sheer cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.
