Anaheim, California, once a sleepy farming town, is now a thriving metropolis bursting with activities for visitors and locals alike. Located within thirty-five miles of Los Angeles International Airport, John Wayne-Orange County Airport, and Ontario International Airport, Anaheim is just a short drive in a shuttle bus or rental car for any traveler. What can you do in Anaheim?
The first attraction that comes to mind, of course, is Disneyland. Opened in 1955, Disneyland was the first theme park that Walt Disney built. Favorite rides are the Haunted Mansion, the Pirates of the Caribbean, and Space Mountain. Do not forget to take kids of all ages to Mickey¡¯s Toontown. See ¡°Snow White-An Enchanting Musical¡± and Mickey¡¯s famous ¡°Fantasmic.¡± For those of you who really want to immerse yourselves in Disney-mania, there are four separate tours available. The ¡°Welcome to Disney Tour¡± will give you all sorts of interesting Disney facts to ponder, give you priority seating at one stage show or parade, and you will receive two bonus Fastpass tickets. You will get a ride on the Disneyland Railroad, a special peek behind the scenes of the Audio-Animatronics in the Enchanted Tiki Room, and have lunch in the Disney Gallery, originally Walt and Roy Disney¡¯s¡¯ apartment, if you take ¡°A Walk in Walt¡¯s Footsteps¡± tour. You will become a detective and hunt for hidden treasure with the help of Disney characters if you participate in ¡°Discover the Magic.¡± A personal guide will take you, your family, and friends on a special tour of the Park with the ¡°Premier Tour.¡±
Disney opened up a sister park in 2001, Disneyland¡¯s California Adventure. This park is dedicated to California, its past, and its future. Visit ¡°The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.¡± Look into Disney¡¯s animation and how it works. California Adventure is also home to Disney¡¯s famous Electrical Parade, so stick around after dark!
Downtown Disney offers fine restaurants and nightspots. For great music, visit the House of Blues or Ralph Brennan¡¯s Jazz Kitchen¡ªFlambeaux¡¯s Jazz Club. At the ESPN Zone Sports Arena, you can eat, watch sports events on 175 televisions, and play interactive games to your heart¡¯s content. The shopping is outstanding, with a Department 56, a Lego Imagination Center, and of course, World of Disney.
Yes, there is more to Anaheim than Disney. During baseball season, Anaheim is home to the Angels who (naturally) play at Angel Stadium. Angel Stadium, with a capacity of roughly 45,000, is the perfect way to while away a summer afternoon or evening. The Stadium has three full service restaurants and even has an interactive game area if you do not want to sing during the seventh inning stretch.
The Anaheim Pond features the Mighty Ducks during hockey season. It also offers a unique venue for concerts and other special events year around. Every year, the Harlem Globetrotters, Disney on Ice, and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus show up at the Pond. Check online at the Pond¡¯s website to see what will be happening when you are in town.
For something a little different, visit the Hobby City Doll and Toy Museum. Including a half-scale replica of the White House, the museum contains thousands of toys and dolls, some of them quite rare. Hobby City also includes collectible and hobby shops for browsing.
The Anaheim Museum traces the history of the land and the people of Anaheim through the ages. The Museum includes a Children¡¯s Center that introduces communications from petroglyfs to fiber optics. The museum also has special exhibits and events, so be sure to save a little extra time for something special.
Anaheim has many exciting adventures waiting for you. Disneyland and California Adventure can keep you busy for several days alone. There are many fine places to dine and great entertainment. Do not forget to give Mickey a hug! |
