Playa Del Carmen, Mexico definitely has something for everyone. Whether you go to Playa Del Carmen with a travel agency or on your own, you can find everything from ancient Mayan ruins to beautiful underwater coral reefs. The first thing you will notice upon arriving in Playa Del Carmen is the plethora of tours that you can take. You can visit all these sites on your own and save a couple of bucks, but with the tour, transportation, lunch, and guides are provided. The guides will spend the day telling you some very interesting facts and history about the areas to which you are being taken.
The Yucatan peninsula was the heart of the ancient Mayan civilization. There are three main archeological sites that you can visit. The former capital of the Mayan world was at Chichen Itza. This is the largest area of Mayan ruins in the Yucatan. One can easily spend an entire day exploring this beautiful ancient city. A guide can be arranged upon arrival for those who venture there on their own, and it is definitely worth it. The adventuresome may still climb up the main temple of El Castillo. El Castillo is well-known because on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, sunlight bathes the western side of the main stairway. This gives the illusion of a serpent¡¯s body moving sinuously down the pyramid until it joins with the serpent head carved in stone at the bottom. Thousands of people flock to this spectacle every year, so if you don¡¯t like to fight the crowds, avoid Chichen Itza on these days. If you sign up for this tour it is good to know in advance that you can expect a three-hour bus ride each way. Chichen Itza is located towards the center of the Yucatan, out in the jungle. This usually leads to about a 12-hour day, but it¡¯s well worth it. The next Mayan site most tour agencies offer is Tulum. Although not as big as Chichen Itza, it is still an impressive site. Tulum is about an hour south of Playa Del Carmen. Tulum currently does not allow you to climb the temple¡¯s steps. On a recent trip to Playa Del Carmen, I ran across a tour called ¡°Tulum Express.¡± The tour left our hotel at 730 and returned a little after noon. This is a great tour to take if you want to see some Mayan ruins and not spend the whole day on it. Tulum is the smallest and also the most picturesque of the Mayan sites. A less known, but very impressive site is Coba. Coba is located about 45 miles northwest of Tulum. This site is being actively restored and is rather large. Coba contains the tallest temple in the northern Yucatan at 140 feet (El Castillo at Chichen Itza is only 75 feet). A guide can be arranged upon arrival and will give you a two to three hour tour. You can still climb the temple steps and partake in an awesome view of the surrounding jungle and lakes.
There are two big ecological water parks. The first one is Xel-Ha, which is located about 35 miles south of Playa Del Carmen. The park offers all-inclusive and basic entry fees. The all-inclusive fee includes towels, a family-sized locker, meals, beverages, and use of all snorkel equipment, including a snorkel tube that is yours to keep. The all-inclusive price is $50 for adults and $25 for children. The basic entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children; these prices are slightly higher during the week. Xel-Ha is a snorkeler¡¯s paradise with an amazing array of fish and flora. The park also offers additional attractions at an extra cost. The most popular and expensive attraction allows you to swim with dolphins. One hour with the dolphins will run about $115. The other ecopark is Xcaret. Xcaret is only a 5-minute drive from Playa del Carmen. The basic entry fee is $49 for adults and $25 for children. They also offer an excursion price, which includes transportation at $71 for adults and $43 for children. Where Xel-Ha is mostly an aquapark, Xcaret has a wide variety of attractions. They have all kinds of wildlife, from jaguars, to crocodiles, to butterflies. Xcaret also offers several different shows every day, which have something for everyone. There are several areas that offer superb snorkeling, and an optional snorkeling tour is available. Snorkeling equipment rental is $10. All in all, both Xel-Ha and Xcaret make excellent places to spend an entire day swimming, snorkeling, and exploring.
One snorkeling tour that is exceptional is called the Mayan Adventure. This tour company takes you to three different locations in one day. The first location is a fresh water cenote. This is an ancient sinkhole that has filled in with fresh water over the years. The cenote has a beautiful variety of fresh water fish and has crystal clear water. There also is a 15-foot cliff that you can jump off of, which they call the Mayan sacrifice. The second place is an underground cave that has been flooded, which contains many little fish. The cave is filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. As the tour guides will tell you repeatedly, the water is nice and refreshing! After some snorkeling in the cave, they will take you to a nearby shelter for lunch. Then, you are off to the final stop- the lagoon. There, an underground river flows into the Caribbean. This mixing of fresh water and salt water causes the water to appear oily, but the fish and coral are amazing. Plus keep an eye out for stingrays, barracuda, and sea turtles. The swim out to the main reef is one killer workout, but the view is well worth it!
One general tip is that wherever you can snorkel, you can also scuba dive. There are many PADI scuba shops in Playa Del Carmen, so scuba diving is very accessible. Many dive shops even offer certification classes, although you really need to shop around since prices tend to vary greatly. Also, when visiting Playa Del Carmen, it is important to remember that many businesses will negotiate prices, especially the smaller street shops.
