South Dakota is a state that is rich in history and entertainment.  There are so many different things to see and to do in the state.  There is also a wide range of different terrain from the flat plains of the eastern side of the state, through the rough and bumpy Badlands, up to the beginnings of the great Rocky Mountains.  South Dakota is an interesting state to visit.  

One of the biggest draws on the eastern side of the state of South Dakota is for those who are fans of the Little House on the Prairie series.  De Smet is the city where Laura Ingalls and her family finally settled after their trip to the west from Pepin, Wisconsin.  Located in the city of De Smet, you can still find the surveyors house where the family stayed their first winter in the area.  There is also the claim shanty that Pa first built that later grew to be a house with the 5 cottonwood trees that Pa planted still in place.  You can also find the store building that Pa built, a school house, and also visit a few of the family members¡¯ graves at the local graveyard.  

The Badlands is also an interesting place to see.  The land is unique and can not be seen anywhere else.  There are many different unusual rock formations that made travel back in the pioneer days nearly impossible.  Today, there is a road through the National Park that allows visitors to see many sides to the park.  Camping is also available in the park for those who wish to stay close to the unique rock formations.

After the Badlands come the mountains and all they have to offer.  Rapid City is a bustling area for tourism.  Mount Rushmore is one of the biggest draws to this area.  Visitors can see the 4 presidents, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Washington, and Jefferson carved into the side of the mountain, still in pristine condition after all this time.  There are also numerous caves with their unique formations in the area as well.  

Custer is another big area for tourism.  This area contains Custer State Park where guest can see many herd of buffalo which still roam free through the area.  Wild donkeys are also prominent in this area.  The Crazy Horse memorial is also under construction in this area and can be viewed.  Needles Highway is a must see as well.  This scenic highway threads 14 miles through oddly shaped granite spires.

For those who like a little gambling and a true old west feel, Deadwood is the area for you.  This area features several different casinos and bars.  There are also live Old West reenactments for guests to enjoy.  These shows feature Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, and Doe Holiday.  Hickok was shot and killed in Deadwood during a poker game in 1876.

South Dakota is full of many different historical sites and also some magnificent natural scenery.  It is a great place to take a family vacation.  There are so many learning experiences and just enjoying of nature to be done in the state.
