South Dakota combines incredible natural wonders with stunning human accomplishments, creating a definite catalyst for romance. In any region of this large state, you can easily get swept away by the breathtaking human and natural phenomenon surrounding you.
South Dakota is most famous for the spectacular achievement of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The massive faces of four outstanding U.S. Presidents carved into the side of the rocky mountain is certainly an impressive sight. Unfortunately, with millions of visitors each year, the Mount Rushmore Visitor’s Center can become quite crowded.
The enormous scale of Mount Rushmore, allows you to view the sculpture from afar, in a more intimate setting. The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway cuts through the Black Hills and provides spectacular vistas of Mount Rushmore. An especially windy part of this road, also known as Iron Mountain Highway, is amazingly carved into the steep hillside. Three granite tunnels act as a perfect square frame of Mount Rushmore in the distance as you curve around the corners. You can park at small pull-offs at the bottom of any of the tunnels and climb to the top. Standing on top of the rock tunnel, feeling on top of the world, you view gorgeous 360 degree views of the 7,000 foot granite needles, the forested Black Elk Wilderness, grassy prairies, and of course, Mount Rushmore. Alone, away from the crowds, this is an ideal setting for romance.
If you head south through the Black Hills on the scenic byway, you can reach one of the largest state parks in the United States, 73,000 acre Custer State Park. This special recreation area is one of the state’s gems and has an excellent game refuge and is perfect for observing wildlife. As large herd of buffalo migrate and graze here, in their element, and are a wonder to watch. You can drive around the 17 mile wildlife loop and veer off on dirt roads to escape any crowds. Other animals you might glimpse include, mountain goats, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, elk, antelope, mule deer and more.
Custer State Park has miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to hard, with the most difficult being the climb to the top of Harney’s Peak. Four lakes and three streams are accessible for swimming, paddleboats or fishing. The park is well equipped with plenty of romantic activities available such as horseback riding or bicycling. Both your meals and lodging at the four resort areas within the park can range from rustic to elegant with everything in between. There are plenty of quiet campsites for those who find romance sleeping under the stars. Sylvan Lake Lodge is the most romantic and luxurious resort offering an upscale dining room and rooms with fireplaces and private balconies.
In 1874, General Custer and his men first struck gold in what is now Custer State Park and ignited the Black Hills Gold Rush. It is a wondrous natural setting and you are sure to ignite a romance rush as well. If the adrenaline rush of gambling ignites your romance, Deadwood is a town in the Black Hills that can take you back to the Wild West. Historic buildings frequented by characters such as Wild Bill Hickok have been renovated and are now small casinos, hotels, and shops with western jewelry and clothing.
South Dakota is renowned for its diverse terrain. Just east of the mountainous Black Hills region, emerging in stark contrast are the Badlands. The 244,000 acre National Park boasts sandstone formations that make you feel like you are on the moon. Spires, pinnacles and gorges are intermixed with grassy prairies and some wildlife. Sunrise is a spectacular and romantic time to see the Badlands. You can spend the night in the park either camping or in rustic cabins. Morning is the quietest time in the Badlands and offers the chance to see a striking rainbow of colors glisten off the sandstone and more opportunity to catch a glimpse of a coyote or other wild animals.
The Central part of the state has a mid-west feel with wide open spaces. The Missouri River cuts through the center of the state with high grassy bluffs on either side. This region is known as the Great Lakes area because four large dams were created from the powerful river to provide power, control flooding, and offer water recreation. Historic markers can be found noting anything from cultural interests, such as Lewis and Clark or Sitting Bull, to natural wonders as well.
Northeast South Dakota is a peaceful land of rolling hills and flat prairies. Some terrain is forested and other land is covered with glacial lakes and rivers. This is a tremendous area for bird watching, hunting, and fishing. If history interests you, Fort Sisseton is one of the best preserved forts in the United States. Displays of Native American life and re-enactments can be viewed at what has now become a State Park.
Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota, is found in the Southeast region of this Midwestern state. With more than sixty parks, Sioux Falls is a wonderful city for couples to explore on foot, with plenty of intimate picnic spots. Its name came from the Big Sioux River’s waterfalls in the heart of the city. Here at Falls Park you can walk a trail close to the plunging water or view the terraced falls from an observation tower at the Visitor’s Center. Nighttime is surely romantic at the park with a light program that illuminates the water.
From stark badlands to grassy prairies, forested mountains to glacial lakes, South Dakota is a land of brilliant and diverse natural beauty intermixed with amazing human formations. With activities and accommodations as diverse as the landscape, any vacation in South Dakota feels like a honeymoon. |
