Tourism guides: Cities and information for Maryland

Maryland is a beautiful state with excellent roads that make it easy to travel and relax.  Most of Maryland consists of suburbs and rural area with a few cities.  Its a great place to visit because of sandy beaches and federal parks on the Eastern Shore, the city of Baltimore in the center boasting culture, nightlife, and mass transit, and then drive west to a quiet farm community where the crickets are loud at night.

Baltimore, to me, is like a miniature New York City.  The hustle and bustle, tourists, and museums are there, but the city seems more inviting to an inexperienced traveler.  When visiting the downtown Inner Harbor area, one can travel to many hotspots and places of interest via walking, taxi, or even water taxi.  There are several shopping complexes that also boast great restaurants and cafes.  Some nationally known businesses are in this part of town like ESPNZone, Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters, and Cheesecake Restaurant.  A quick trip to the Baltimore Aquarium or Columbus Science Center can enhance your mind and excite your senses.  Many colleges are within and nearby in surrounding suburbs of the city, if you have teens who want to attend a great school.  To the north on Interstate 95 are more rural counties and the direction of Philadelphia.  When traveling southbound on the same route, Montgomery County and Washington, D.C., and Virginia are not too far (about one hour away).  Montgomery County has just about everything you can imagine including government establishments, suburban life abounding, state parks, and accommodations for trendy lifestyles.

The Eastern Shore has its own culture and laidback atmosphere.  A visit to Chincoteague Island to see the wild ponies, a walk on the miles of beach shoreline and boardwalk at Ocean City, and an excellent seafood meal are all that is required of the sociable and outdoors type of traveler from Route 50 East.  Along the way, Annapolis and vicinity is full of sailors, shopping, and water sports.  The historic harbor is occupied by the Naval Academy, which holds a graduation ceremony and parade each year at the end of May.  It truly is a sight to behold with proud families and enthusiastic students being sent off into the military future in such a fanfare.  The stores and restaurants near the water are just a taste of the hospitality from locals and friendly bed and breakfast lodgings.  Make your reservations early as they book rather quickly throughout the spring and summer.

Heading further down Route 50 comes Kent Island, Wicomico County with local neighborhoods, and the Worcester County (pronounced Wooster) where the land meets Ocean City.  Ocean City holds many memories for families, high school and college kids, and beachgoers from all walks of life.  There are two Ocean City communities that should not be confused.  One is in New Jersey, and the other is in Maryland.  They both have boardwalks, seafood restaurants, and sundries stores with souvenirs.  What is the main difference?  I think its the visitors and where they come from.  In New Jersey, many hail from Philadelphia area, New York City area, and all over New Jersey.  The MD Ocean City may have more people from Delaware, Baltimore area, DC area, and Virginia.  Its easy access to Route 50 from the Capitol Beltway (Route 695) and Route 495 Beltway heading south on Interstate 95 and going through the tunnel.

Maryland has more rural areas in the western part of the state including Hagerstown, where you can go tubing down the river for a slow, relaxing summer day.  Howard County is the furthest western suburb of Baltimore and contains the Blair Witch Project forest where they camped.  Many people have flocked to this region for a night's stay or even an eerie walk in the woods at the infamous state park.
