North Dakota boasts colorful badlands, flat grasslands, wide-open prairies, abundant wildlife, and Old West historic sights. The natural rugged scenery blended with an interesting history offers many romantic atmospheres and activities for couples traveling in North Dakota.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park covers 70,000 acres in three separate units within the state¡¯s extensive Little Missouri National Grasslands. The National Park is named for the conservationist President and features dramatic badlands and forested riverbanks and valleys lining scenic drives. Drive the 36 mile South Unit loop stopping at markers noting historical and natural park highlights. Hundreds of miles of trails traversed on horseback or foot make it easy to escape into backcountry solitude. View wildlife throughout the park such as bison, wild horses, elk, coyote, and prairie-dogs. Three campgrounds are available in the North and South Units. Nightfall is a mystical, romantic time in the park¡¯s wilderness. As Theodore Roosevelt said, ¡°The Bad Lands seem to be stranger and wilder than ever, the silvery rays turning the country into a kind of grim fairyland.¡±

Another scenic drive east of the National Park is the 51 mile Lost Bridge Road which winds its way to the top of the Kildeer Mountains. Stop at scenic pull-offs along the way and marvel at the badland¡¯s bright colors and Lake Sakakawea¡¯s impressive dam. The 29 mile Kildeer Byway also passes through the mountains and the Missouri River Valley.

On the southern edge skirts of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the small town of Medora. Tour the Chateau de Mores Tower, a State Historic Site. The 27-room mansion still has its original nineteenth century furnishings and sits on a ridge with a view of Medora. Experience the Old West strolling down Main Street. In the summers enjoy outdoor musicals at the natural amphitheater carved in the side of a canyon on the edge of town. Stay in a log cabin at Dahkotah Lodge, a working ranch with wildlife and stunning views of the frontier. 

Minutes from historic Medora is Sully Creek State Recreation Area which also reveals dramatic and colorful land formations. Hike, mountain bike, or ride horseback through the woods and grasslands on the long Maah Daah Hey Trail. Meander down the Little Missouri River on a canoe to view the badlands from the water. Enjoy an afternoon picnicking or a night camping under the stars.

Little Missouri State Park is east of the National Grasslands on the Southwest corner of Fort Bertholf Indian Reservation. The Sioux called the area ¡®Mako Sika¡¯ which means ¡®where the land breaks¡¯ and breathtaking formations emerge from this primitive land. Most of the thirty hiking and horseback riding trails lead to views of the Little Missouri River. The State Park rents horses for couples to venture on their own or with a guide. 

A few minutes south of Little Missouri State Park, on Highway 200, is the Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge. The 4,034 acre grassland, prairie, and wetland environment is an oasis for over 200 bird species including swans, hawks, and eagles.

On the Northeast corner of the Fort Bertholf Indian Reservation is North Dakota¡¯s walleye capital, Fort Stevenson State Park. Located on a peninsula jutting into cold Lake Sakakawea, park attractions include boating, fishing, hiking, camping, cabins, and a prairie-dog town.

Devil¡¯s Lake is North Dakota¡¯s largest natural body of water with three state parks bordering its shoreline. Rustic and modern campgrounds are available in the summers. Various sporting activities ranging from ice skating to fishing are popular throughout the different seasons. Head south on Highway 57 and stay at Spirit Lake Casino and Resort for some elegant accommodations and gaming excitement.

Cities such as Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck offer couples a variety of lodging and dining options. North Dakota¡¯s capital city Bismarck is in the West central part of the state. For some cultural enlightenment visit the North Dakota Heritage Center and Sakakawea Statue on East Boulevard Avenue. Sertoma Riverside Park sits on Riverside Road and West Arbor Avenue near the banks of the Missouri River. Visit the Dakota Zoo, play volleyball or horseshoe, and hike down trails away from the crowds to the water¡¯s edge.

One hundred miles east of Bismarck is beautiful Jamestown typifying the Old West atmosphere. Jamestown features a reconstructed ¡®Frontier Village¡¯ with seemingly authentic buildings and buffalo roaming in surrounding fields. Visit the trading post and National Buffalo Museum with a viewing deck to observe the live bison herd.

Wildlife is abundant near Jamestown along the James River in east central North Dakota. Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935 and encompasses more than 15,000 acres of lakes, prairie grasslands, and cultivated fields. The marshy grasslands attract over 250 types of birds ranging from pelicans to Canadian geese. On the east side of Arrowwood Lake, Warbler Woodland Watchable Wildlife Area is a popular bird-watching destination. Veer off of Edmunds Kensal Road and take a scenic auto tour route to observe prairie-dogs, minks, and white-tailed deer from you car. Snow-shoe or cross-country ski and experience an intimate encounter with North Dakota wildlife in the winter.

The 2,300 acre International Peace Garden sits on North Dakota¡¯s Canadian border in the north central part of the state. Situated in the foothills of the Turtle Mountains the formal garden boasts a floral clock, bell tower, reflecting pools, and fountains. The garden pays tribute to the peaceful relationship between the United States and Canada and the wooded surroundings reflect a tranquil ambience.
