An individual or family looking to experience a memorable and fun vacation should plan a trip to Virginia.  What does Virginia have to offer that other travel destinations may be missing?  Virginia offers a unique mix of historic locations combined with modern destinations.  This is obvious in various cities found throughout the Commonwealth.

Arlington.     Arlington, located in northern Virginia, is nestled near the Potomac River and Washington DC.  Each year, millions of people flock to Arlington in order to tour its prestigious museums and historical sites.  

Annually, over four million visitors come to Arlington National Cemetery; the final resting place for over 225,000 members of the armed forces.  One of the most popular burial places is that the late President John F. Kennedy who was assassinated in 1963.  The eternal flame that stands near the grave is never extinguished and remains lit via fuel from an underground line.

The cemetery is also home to America¡¯s unknown soldiers.  This tomb contains the remains of one soldier each from World War I, World War II and Vietnam.  The remains of the soldier from the Korean War were identified in 1998.  The tomb is guarded 24-hours a day by the 3rd U.S. Infantry.

The Arlington House is located on the premises of Arlington National Cemetery.  This is the former home of General Robert E. Lee who lived here for over thirty years prior to the Civil War.

Across from Arlington National Cemetery is the Pentagon.  This five sided office building spans over 580 acres.  It was originally built during World War II and today is renowned for being the home of the United States¡¯ Department of Defense.  The Pentagon was able to withstand the attacks of September 11th, 2001 and today travelers can partake in guided, 90 minute tours.

George Washington National Memorial was named after America¡¯s first President, George Washington, and stands approximately 333 feet tall.  Visitors not only get the opportunity to see astounding views of Washington D.C. but can also stop by the George Washington museum located on the premises.

Williamsburg.     Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown allows visitors to experience the culture and way of life during the 17th and 18th centuries.  

Colonial Williamsburg is home to the College of William and Mary, located near the end of Duke of Gloucester Street.   Since 1693, the college, named after the then King and Queen of England, has been one of the country¡¯s top universities.  The Wren Building, constructed in the late 17th century, is the oldest academic building in America.  

Visitors are given the opportunity to visit colonial homes, a tavern and the Episcopal Church that are also located on Duke of Gloucester Street.  People in period dress can be seen running various shops, conducting tours, making soap or driving a horse and buggy.

Numerous attempts at a permanent settlement in the New World were thwarted in the past.  However, in 1607, the wooden fort known as Jamestown succeeded where others had failed.  Despite suffering from Indian attacks, hunger and a different climate, Jamestown became the lasting colony that England had hoped for.

Although the original fort is gone, visitors can experience a taste of life from the 17th century by visiting a replica of the fort, various Native American dwellings and replicas of the three ships that brought people to their new life in America.

Busch Gardens has long been one of the top amusement parks in America.  Families get the opportunity to experience a variety of rides, shops and amusements while walking through areas deemed as European countries.  Some of the park¡¯s more infamous rides include Alpengeist, Drachen Fire and the Haunts of the Olde Country.

Charlottesville.     Located in the heart of Virginia, Charlottesville is the birthplace and home of America¡¯s 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson.  Visitors to Jefferson¡¯s home, Monticello, will be in awe of its magnificent architecture.  They will also be able to view a number of antiques, such as Jefferson¡¯s writing desk, that are on display.

Mitchie¡¯s Tavern is located a short distance from Monticello.  Travelers can experience period cuisine as well as partake in activities from the 1700¡¯s.

One of the most renowned colleges in the United States is found in Charlottesville.  The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, who also designed many of the buildings on campus.  Thousands of students have graced the hallways of the university, including Edgar Allan Poe.  Today, over 18,000 students are enrolled.

Alexandria.     Founded in 1670, Alexandria is located just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C.  Although it was considered to be part of Washington D.C. in the mid-1800s, today it is a thriving city in northern Virginia.  

One of the most popular travel destinations in Alexandria is Mount Vernon.  Located just outside of Alexandria, Mount Vernon is the plantation of America¡¯s first President, George Washington.  Today, visitors can experience life in the 18th century by walking the outside grounds.  Inside, a person can take a historical look into the life of Washington.

For a more modern approach to history and/or nature, a person can opt to stop by Alexandria¡¯s Atlantic Kayak.  A person can experience Washington D.C. via a kayak on the Potomac River.  For the nature buff, he or she can choose a kayak trip to the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Area to see a variety of birds in their own habitat.

The Ramsay House was built in 1725 and is considered to be the oldest building in Alexandria.  Over the years it has been used for everything from a tavern to cigar factory.  Today, it is a visitor¡¯s location that allows travelers to purchase tickets for various attractions around the city.

Yorktown.     Yorktown is infamous for being the site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War.  In October 1781, the declaration for the end of the war was signed here.  Today there are a number of historic sites to visit in Yorktown.

For a variety of information and displays on the Revolutionary War, a person should stop by the Yorktown Victory Center.  The Center offers a complete history of the Revolutionary War from beginning to end.

To experience part of the 18th century history, a person needs to go no further than the Yorktown Battlefield.  Structures such as British strongholds, encampment sites and headquarters can be toured.  Tours of the actual battlefield are self-guided.

Lynchburg.     One of Central Virginia¡¯s busiest and growing cities is Lynchburg.  Located on the James River, Lynchburg was founded in 1757.

Just outside of Lynchburg, in Bedford, a person can visit Thomas Jefferson¡¯s vacation home, Poplar Forest.  Designed by Jefferson, construction on the house started in the early 1800s.  However, the home was vacant for a number of years and grew into disrepair.  Today, the home is currently being restored but is still unfurnished.

The oldest cemetery in the area is located in Lynchburg¡¯s city limits.  The Old City Cemetery is one of the country¡¯s historic destinations.  It is the final resting place to over 2,000 Confederate soldiers.

On the outskirts of Lynchburg, travelers can find the town of Appomattox.  In April 1865, Appomattox became a part of history by being the site of the end of the Civil War.  Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee met at the McLean House to discuss terms of surrender.  Visitors to Appomattox can tour the reconstructed site of the infamous building.

Newport News.     Newport News is best known for being home to massive shipbuilding as well as one of the greatest harbors in the world.  The Mariner¡¯s Museum located in Newport News is second to none.   A person can view an extensive number of exhibits and displays on nautical history that includes shipbuilding and sea life.

Not far from the Mariner¡¯s Museum, travelers can visit the Virginia Living Museum.  A variety of items are on display, including various plant life and wildlife.

Newport News is also home to Fort Eustis.  The United States¡¯ Army Transportation Center is located at this site as well as the U.S. Army Transportation Museum.  The Center allows tours via vehicles on the base.  The museum displays the variety of transportation that has been available to the armed forces from the Revolutionary War period to present day.  All tours of Fort Eustis are free to the public.

Richmond.     The Commonwealth¡¯s capital city is also one of its most populated areas.  

Visitors to Richmond can choose from a variety of museums as well as historic destinations.

For a family outing, the Richmond Children¡¯s Museum and Science Museum of Virginia are excellent places to start.  The Children¡¯s Museum has numerous displays that allow children to touch and/or test the exhibit.  The Science Museum offers displays on astronomy, electrical information and perception.

Richmond¡¯s capital building was designed by Thomas Jefferson.  Built in the 1780s, the building was one of the first to have an interior dome and is adorned with a priceless collection of art and statuary.  

One of the oldest sites in Richmond is St. John¡¯s Episcopal Church.  Constructed in the 1740s, this was the site of Patrick Henry¡¯s infamous speech.  Today, visitors can view reenactments of this stirring era in U.S. history.
