The Birmingham Zoo entertains almost half a million visitors annually. The zoo has been operating for fifty years, and it serves as home to about 800 animals from over 200 species. The zoo is home to mammals, birds, and reptiles and includes endangered species from six continents. The Birmingham Zoo also hosts regularly hosts traveling exhibits.
The greater Birmingham area also features Visionland Amusement Park. Visionland is located about fifteen minutes from Birmingham in Bessemer. The park offers numerous attractions, including rides, shows, and a full water park. Visionland¡¯s main attraction is The Rampage, a three-loop roller coaster. The adjoining water park features numerous water slides, a wave pool, and a beach.
Birmingham also serves as home to a minor league baseball team, The Birmingham Barons. The Barons are a Double A farm team for the Chicago White Sox. The Barons play their home games at the Hoover Met, a sprawling modern stadium just south of Birmingham. The team is operated both to provide high quality baseball and entertainment. Every Barons Friday home game is followed by a fireworks show, and the organization hosts many feature nights during the season. The promotions frequently allow children to access playing field between innings to dig in the infield dirt for a prize or chase down fly balls in the outfield. Additionally, the club regularly gives away team apparel and memorabilia to ticket purchasers.
Children might also be entertained by a trip to Vulcan Park. Vulcan is an iron statute that overlooks the city of Birmingham from his perch on top of Red Mountain. The construction of Vulcan was originally ordered by Birmingham city leaders to commemorate the cities position as a major steel manufacturer. Vulcan is the second largest statute in the United States behind only the Statute of Liberty. He overlooks the Birmingham and is clearly visible from the interstate leading into Birmingham. Visitors can travel to an observation deck at the top of the Vulcan statue to look out the city of Birmingham.
Birmingham is also home of the Barber Motorsports Hall of Fame. The five-floor museum contains one of the largest collections of motorcycles and racecars in the world. Over 900 motorcycles, produced by over 100 different manufacturers, are on display. The museum is located adjacent to the Barber Motorsports Park, which hosts several races each year.
