Valletta. How many times have you heard this city mentioned? Well for those of you who do not know of Valletta, let me take you on a bit of a journey. Valletta is the capital city of Malta and is rich in history. It has been called a World Heritage City, the Fortress City, and ¡°a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen¡±.

Try Shopping

Valletta is a haven for churches, art, and wonderful antique centers. Its main shopping streets are Republic Street and Merchants Street, definite stops on the tourist path. Here you will find small narrow streets that are lined with art and selling everything you can imagine. There are votive statues, fountains, courtyards, gardens, and caf¨¦¡¯s as well. There is well known fashion and music centers that are on Republic and Merchants also.

See the Monuments

For the photography buff, there are 320 monuments in Valletta. The city has been ruled historically by the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and the Order of the Knights of St John.

Catch Some Culture

The Centre for Creativity has theatre, exhibitions, cinema, and caf¨¦¡¯s for your pleasure. A stop here will keep you enlightened for hours.

Gateways

Kingsgate was once known as Porta Reale and was dedicated to St. George as the gateway to the city. The bridge to Floriana was widened after the 1964 gate demolition. This is a great stop for photos and for reminiscing.

Oldest Building

Our Lady of Victory, on Victory Square and South is the first building that was erected in the city of Valletta. It is dedicated to the lifting of the Great Siege. It has four altars and an apse on the east side of the church. This is the oldest building in the city, and one of the richest in architecture.

Valletta¡¯s Lover¡¯s Leap

Site of Old Lifts is famous for reaching the center of Valletta from the wharf without walking up the very steep streets. It became a sort of ¡°Lover¡¯s Leap¡± before being destroyed; a few people did end their lives by plunging off of it. It used to connect the Upper Barracca Gardens and the Lascaris Wharf.

Great Structures

The Auberge de Castille et Leon will greet you as you visit the city. It is the building that you see when you first arrive. It was designed by Girolamo Cassar but was later remodeled. It is one of the finest structures on Malta out of the 18th century. It now houses the Prime Minister¡¯s offices. However, it is a lovely stop for photos or casual reflection.  

Crafting Opportunities

Crafting is a favorite past time in the city, and there are three main centers for craft hunting. Ta¡¯ Qali Crafts Village, Ta¡¯ Dbiegi Crafts Village, and in Gozo. However, there are plenty of local crafts sold in many of the souvenir shops across the city. 

The Night Life

The night life clubbing scene is very alive in Valletta. Don¡¯t miss top international DeeJays appearing in places like Paceville and St. Julian¡¯s. If this doesn¡¯t get your blood pumping, test your skills at the local casino.

Military Fort

Fort St. Elmo houses the fort and the National War Museum. History buffs will love this building and can visit on the weekends. It currently is housing the national police force, but the guided tour is free once you pay a 1LM fee to enter. The fort was built in 1552 and in only six months. A wonderful photo opportunity and a chance to learn a bit about Valletta.    

All in all, these aforementioned ten places are tops on any tourist list to the city. Take in a shop or two, weave a basket, and club your way into the night.
