The ancient city of Sintra is found near Portugal¡¯s western border.  Once a retreat for the country¡¯s royal family, today Sintra holds the distinction of being a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage site sinc e1995 and is home to over 220,000 citizens.  What are some of the most popular places for a traveler to visit when touring Sintra?

Palacio National de Pena. This 19th century castle is considered one of the top tourist destinations in Sintra.  Visitors who are willing to climb some of the castle¡¯s steep steps will appreciate the castle¡¯s architecture and stone carvings of people, animals and plants as well as the noticeable minarets and turrets.

Palacio Nacional da Vila de Sintra.The Palacio Nacional da Vila de Sintra was once the palace of the royal family.  The palace not only boasts a unique blend of Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance architecture but also includes a variety of azulejos, or Portuguese tiles.

Castelo dos Mouros. A person hoping to experience breathtaking views of Sintra should make a visit to Castelo Dos Mouros a top priority.  This Moorish castle is located on a hillside that overlooks Sintra.  Not only are the views spectacular, but nature enthusiasts will appreciate being surrounded by the local flora and fauna.

Adraga Beach. For more of Sintra¡¯s extraordinary scenery, a traveler should make plans to visit Adraga Beach.  This popular destination is not easily accessible.  Visitors must journey through the area¡¯s mountainous terrain to reach the beach.  However, most people believe that the trip is worth it just to see the blue water and pristine conditions that Adraga Beach offers.

Pena Park. Sintra¡¯s Pena Park is another favorite place for nature lovers.  The park was created by a member of the royal family, Fernando II, when he ordered trees planted in the vicinity in the 1800s.  Today, the park is a peaceful retreat for the locals as well as the wearied traveler.  Two of the favorite destinations in the park are the Cruz Alta, which, at almost 550 meters, is the highest point in the park and a cross that was erected in the park in 1522.

Church of St. Maria.This 12th century church is one of the oldest in Sintra.  Visitors will be intrigued by the Church of St. Maria¡¯s Gothic architecture.  However, it is the church¡¯s 17th century wooden sculpture of the Immaculate Conception that makes the Church of St. Maria a popular tourist destination.

Monastery dos Capuchos. This simple monastery was founded in the mid 16th century by Dom Alvaro de Castro.  Despite its meager surrounding, visitors from all over the world come to the Monastery dos Capuchos to see the chapel¡¯s ornate altar as well as frescoes and Portuguese tiles from the 1600s and 1700s.

Museu do Brinquedo. Sintra is not without its fair share of museums.  One of the region¡¯s more unique offerings is the Museu do Brinquedo.  The museum is a favorite destination for children of all ages.  It has numerous displays of toys from various eras and regions from around the world.  From the Barbie doll to toy soldiers, and everything in between, visitors can view a wide array of toys.

Archaeological Museum. Located just outside of Sintra, the area¡¯s Archaeological Museum first opened to the public in the mid 1950s.  Visitors can view a varied assortment of displays from the region¡¯s past.  Of particular interest is the renowned Latin epigraphy collection, a unique collection of mosaics and the remnants of a Middle Ages necropolis.

Sintra Museu de Arte Moderna. Sintra¡¯s art museum showcases a variety of pieces from the 20th century.  Some of the more spectacular offerings are different works from Picasso and Miro as well as the Bernado Collection of art.
