Ocho Rios is probably best known for the amazing waterfalls situated in this resort town of Jamaica. Dunn¡¯s River Falls is definitely one of the top sights to see while visiting Ocho Rios. Many more adventures to be explored within this city once called ¡°Las Chorreras¡± by the Spaniards who once inhabited this tropical paradise.
Dunn¡¯s River Falls has in recent years been developed into a national attraction and park. There are opportunities to climb the steep, cascading falls with the supervision of tour guides. If the uphill trek is too much of a challenge, there are terraces and decks overlooking the 600-foot famous falls. There are craft shops, cafeterias, and gardens to stroll through at this location as well. There is an admission fee charged to enter this attraction or most hotels offer day trips to the park.
The 40-foot natural Eden Falls are a lesser-known attraction in Ocho Rios. The Ruins, as this site is called, offers historic and garden tours of the tropical property. Jamaican arts and crafts are available at The Ruins Art Gallery and Gift Shoppe. A buffet style lunch is available and dinner is highlighted by the illuminated falls that cascade into the Caribbean Sea.
Fern Gully is located just outside the city limits of Ocho Rios. This rocky gorge was called Ocho Rios Gully until a flash flood in 1776 rushed through the gully. A profusion of ferns soon filled the four-mile area renamed for the more than 500 species of ferns found there. Sources claim more varieties of fern exist in this area than on the entire North American continent.
A pier with docking space for several cruise ships has dramatically increased the number of visitors to this part of Jamaica. Several shopping centers have been established and renovated to accommodate the steady stream of tourists. Six shopping plazas exist in and nearby Ocho Rios. Everything from Jamaican crafts to upscale luxury items can be found in these areas if shopping is something you enjoy.
Chukka Cove Farm and Polo Club is about 15 minutes outside of Ocho Rios. Chukka Cove is a farm and stable offering horseback riding for beginners or experienced riders. There are also tours of the dairy and cattle farm available. Polo games are often held at this site, so this may be an opportunity to watch this sport if you have never had the chance.
A fun way to spend an afternoon in the mountain terrain of Ocho Rios is with a tour company that offers tubing on Jamaica¡¯s White River. The three-mile excursion is led by experienced tubing guides and ends at the White River Valley Park where refreshments are provided. This trip isn¡¯t geared for children under six years old.
Irie Beach is located in the hills of Ocho Rios on the White River. Sparkling water cascades over rock chutes, forming emerald pools perfect for swimming. This area is relatively secluded. Trail bike tours are available at this site.
The Firefly is a vacation retreat that is open to the public. It was the home of Noel Coward, a noted playwright, author, actor, and composer. Many famous individuals were guests at this beautiful location. Much of Coward¡¯s memorabilia is on display and biographical information is highlighted. English afternoon tea and light lunches are available. This attraction is about 20 miles outside of Ocho Rios.
If you are interested in Jamaica¡¯s cultural and historical heritage, there are many plantation tours available. Brimmer Hall Estate is located about 18 miles southwest of Ocho Rios. Guides and workers offer interactive information as you tour the property that harvests coconuts, bananas, coffee, and other crops. There is a restaurant, gift shops, and even a swimming pool for cooling off. Sun Valley Plantation is a working plantation that also offers tours in this area.
The Green Grotto and Runaway Caves are situated about two miles east of Discovery Bay. These caves filled with stalagmites and stalactites were a haven for runaway slaves and pirates. Green Grotto is a subterranean lake 120 feet below ground level. Boat trips can be taken on this lake.
