Mazatlan, also known as ”°The Pearl of the Pacific”± is a sensational seaside resort. It extends southward into the Pacific just below the Tropic of Cancer and marks the beginning of the Mexican tropics. Due to its perpetual summer like weather, Mazatlan serves as a refuge from the cold for an increasing number of international travelers.

Below I have briefly described for you ten of the top things that I think, you, as a vacationer, would enjoy:

1. Swimming and sunbathing. Mazatlan is very popular for its ten miles of uninterrupted beach. In the Zona Dorada resort area, the most popular beaches for swimming and sunbathing are Playa Sabalo and Las Gaviotas. At either one of these you will find seaside cafes, strolling vendors and lots of sport activity. A problem here is that these beaches are very crowded.  Playa Olas Altas Beach is popular to the surfing crowd. Here surfing enthusiasts can enjoy the high waves. If you desire to be secluded, Plaja Bruja, just north of the Golden Zone is for you. Also at Plaja Los Cerritos Beach, one can enjoy what Mazatlan is famous for, the unbroken stretches of golden sand bordering the ocean.

2. Shopping. If you are visiting Mazatlan from either the United States or Canada, one would enjoy the many shopping centers in Mazatlan. La Gran Plaza and Comercial Mexicana (now known as Mega), the most popular shopping location, features a variety of small boutique stores, a food court with Mexican, Chinese and American dishes, a 3 screen movie theater and a large department store, Mega. Touristy type items would not be found here but you will find food, clothes, toys, music, and household goods. One would be able to get to the shopping center by bus, for 3 pesos, and can return to his/her hotel via 'pulmonia' (aka taxi.) 

3. Bullfights are offered every Sunday and most holidays, December through April, at the Plaza Monumental. It is located a short ride from the Golden Zone (on Avenida Rafael Buelna.) Rodeos are also featured in this arena during the summer months.

4. Fishing. Mazatlan is Mexico's most popular sport fishing location. There are eight fleets of charter boats ready all year. Two of the most popular are Star Fleet and Bibi Fleet. Types of fish available to be caught are sailfish, marlin, dorado, wahoo, tuna, shrimp and grouper. You might even be able to have your catch prepared at your local restaurant for dinner. 

5. Horseback riding enthusiasts are in luck at the Estrella del Mar Beach Club where there are horses for rent. Another horseback location is the Cerritos Resort where horses can be rented from 8am to 3pm.

6. Tennis or golf can be enjoyed the El Cid Golf and Country Club. The golf course was designed in the Lee Trevino shape and has 27 holes. There are 13 tennis courts. A down side to this golf course is that it is only open to guests of the El Cid Hotel. 

7. Visit the aquarium, The Acuano Mazatlan, which has various exhibits and seal shows. There are more than 50 aquariums and also 200 species of fishes from across the world on display.

8. Walking. If you like walking, you can go on the Historic Center Walking Tour which is an organized tour of Old Mazatlan. Places to see along the tour route are the Central Market, the Cathedral, Plaza Revolution, Plaza Machado, the Angela Peralta theatre and the Archeological Museum. This tour takes place only on Wednesdays at 10 am. It starts at Venustiano Carranza Street and Gonzalez Guevara.

9. Day trip. Ater spending time seeing everything that Mazatlan has to offer, it might be nice to explore the outlying areas. There are two towns within 45 minutes to an hour ride from Mazatlan. One is Concordia which is a very picturesque and small colonial town located in the Sierra Madre foothills. This town was founded in 1565 and features an 18th Century church with a baroque style facade and elaborately decorated columns. Concordia is also known for high quality pottery and hand carved furniture. The second town is Copala which was also founded in 1565 as Mexico's first mining town. Its church dates back to 1748. This town features cobblestone streets with Colonial houses. Burros meander down the streets as freely as pedestrians. Copala is also small enough to tour on foot!!

10. Nightlife. The Mexican Fiesta takes place three nights a week at the Playa Mazatlan Hotel. You will be attending a three hour extravaganza. It starts with a mariachi music followed by dance music for the guests. Next takes place the buffet dinner with a folkloric show featuring singers and dancers in native costumes. A must for your trip to Mazatlan!
