Hawaii¡¯s unique location about halfway around the world from the Greenwich meridian and approximately equidistant between the western United States coast and Japan makes it a haven for some 15 species of birds. More than 2 million birds live on the islands and have learnt to accept limited human influence in a limited way. Hawaii is a must for birding enthusiasts because it is home to species that cannot be sighted anywhere else. It is also a lesson for conservation in other parts of the world for its avian treasures are now protected in exemplary manner, after many losses due to careless human invasion.
Bird watching is convenient in Hawaii because there are many tours operated by experts and guides. The second Saturday of May each year is a great day to be present in the island State as it joins the rest of the Americas to celebrate International Bird Migratory Day. This is also a good time to sight many species on hikes and walks through the forests and shores. Some bird numbers are dwindling and this means that many Reserves and Parks have limited access.
The Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge is a prime birding spot. Albatross, Petrels Frigate birds and Terns are some of the magnificent and beautiful types of avian forms that dwell here. Canaries, mynahs and egrets have been introduced of late. Large numbers of migrants use the Refuge as shelter and for nesting during their long trans-oceanic flight.
The island of Kauai has many large water bodies apart from the shoreline and is therefore rich in resident water birds such as stilts, coots, moor hens and ducks. The island is also a favorite with migrants. Much of the land on this island is privately owned and this places some restrictions on public birding rights. The Greater-Neck laced Laughing Thrush is not a native of Hawaii but is a species that has been introduced. It lives on Kauai. The Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge is part of this island.
The Northern and Eastern parts of Oahu are also relatively rich in avian forms as they are not densely populated as compared to the other parts of the island. The Kaena Park is a suitable site for bird watching activities. The island has some gulls and terns not seen elsewhere in Hawaii.
Though one can see some stilts in the Maui lowlands, it is the mountainous region that is a special delight for bird watchers. Access is severely restricted as the numbers of very rare birds sighted here is dangerously low. The Kakahaia National Wildlife Refuge on Molokai Island is also home to very rare birds, but it is difficult for birders to gain access as the bird numbers are inadequate at this time. The Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge also has restricted access but you can have an extraordinary birding experience if you are able to visit the site.
The Pelagics have become popular of late and are home to many shorebirds. The best way to see them is often to make arrangements with local fisher folk. Tour operators are also available but may combine birding with activities related to other forms of wildlife.
