Bird watching is a world wide activity, but the Scottish Highlands and islands top the charts for opportunity and variety. From the self-guided tour for two people to the group tour for several people, with trips to islands and lighthouses, lochs and mountains, traveling to Scotland will satisfy the most avid bird watcher. 

For those over 55, Elderhostel offers an exceptional package at a reasonable price. During the two-week tour, participants fly in from the states on an overnight flight and are met at the airport . They are transported to Glasgow to spend the night at a first-rate hotel with a welcome reception and dinner buffet. The following day, the group travels to the Inverness area in the Scottish Highlands, more specifically the House of Aigas in Beauly. The property is owned by Sir John Lister-Kaye and his family, and participants will stay in charming 2-bedroom cottages with living room, kitchen and bath, double occupancy. 

The Aigas Field Centre, where students study environmental concerns and lead nature walks and trips for participants, is hosted by Sir John. Lady Lucy¡¯s home cooking is superb and meals are served in the dining room of the House of Aigas, an 18th century baronial estate that includes a sweeping staircase to the second floor. Morning workshops investigate Scottish ecology, and afternoons, with a box lunch, are spent traveling and hiking in the area, back by teatime. Each time a Golden Eagle is seen in the sky, the driver stops and gives people a chance to observe and photograph. On these trips in the highlands and coastal areas, participants might discover black grouse and  shorebirds such as oystercatchers, curlews and phalaropes, as well as Black-throated Divers and, of course, the Golden Eagles. Side trips to the Isle of Skye, where you can hope to see a Corncrake,  and the Orkney Islands offer new sightings of area birds.

For those who have yet to reach Elderhostel age status, try a farmhouse, a bed-and-breakfast or a lighthouse in the Inverness area. Sign up for an overnight or a two-week stay. The Dalmagarry Farm Holiday Cottage is located 12 miles south of Inverness and was built in 2000 specifically for nature lovers. It is close to the River Findhorn and has a good and varied population of breeding birds with over 100 different species to be seen in the immediate vicinity. The cottage can accommodate 6 persons in 3 bedrooms, with a shower room, and a separate bathroom. A large living/dining room leads to a patio and the kitchen contains a dishwasher, fridge, cooker, toaster and microwave oven. No smoking, no pets. One-week and two-week accommodations available.

Millwood House  is a B&B located on Old Mill Road in Inverness. Rooms are available by the night and a discount is given for a booking of 3 nights or more. Culbin Sands, overlooking the Moray Firth, is nearby and is one of the largest shingle and sand dune bars in Britain. You can observe sea ducks, bar-tailed godwits, oyster catchers and knots. It is the most important site in the UK for the Slavonian Grebe. Ospreys and black grouse can be seen regularly, and there is a possibility of spotting a peregrine or hen harrier. At Millwood House three bedrooms are available--Tartan Room, Garden Room, or Rose Room, charmingly furnished and reasonably priced with a full Scottish breakfast each morning. 

Rua Reidh Lighthouse near Gairloch in the Scottish Highlands is between two and two and a half hours from Inverness. The lighthouse sits among mountain and coastal scenery, and the moors behind the lighthouse are home to a wealth of seabirds. You will see wading birds and a wide variety of seabirds. A short hike along the cliffs gives a thrilling view of nesting birds. You can hire a car at Inverness or you can take advantage of public transportation--train or bus to Gairloch--and pick up a rental car for the drive to the lighthouse. The keeper¡¯s house within the lighthouse has been converted to guest accommodations. There is a choice of twin/double rooms with en-suite facilities or shared bathrooms. Family bedrooms are also available. Meals are available for a reasonable price and a self-catering kitchen is available for those wishing to cook for themselves. Hostel dorms are also available.

No bird watching trip would be complete without knowing how much it will cost. The four suggestions above, for travel in August and September, average approximately $3500 per person for a two-week stay in Scotland. The price, which is only slightly higher or lower depending on the season, includes plane fare, rental car, room, and board. The Elderhostel trip is about $500 more ($3990) but one check covers all expenses for the 17-day trip--plane fare, transportation from Glasgow to Beauly, all meals, a double-occupancy cottage with private bath, daily lectures and tours of the area for bird watching and hiking with a satisfactory amount of free time. The only obstacle to choosing this option is that the traveler must be 55 or over.
