Navy Pier

Originally built in 1916, Navy Pier was revitalized in the early 1990¡¯s as one of Mayor Richard M. Daley¡¯s first initiatives for attracting tourism to Chicago. With a children¡¯s museum, IMAX theater, and huge 150-ft. tall Ferris wheel, Navy Pier is a great place to take the kids. But shopping, music, and restaurants make this a fun place for just about anyone. The one-acre Crystal Garden is a beautiful indoor botanical garden, showcasing fountains, palm trees, and other plants. Other family-friendly attractions at Navy Pier include a carousel, miniature golf, cliff climb, and funhouse.

Millennium Park

Chicago¡¯s most recently built attraction, Millennium Park, opened in 2004, only four years late and $300 million over budget. Still, most Chicago residents agree that it was worth the wait. An outdoor artistic space, the park is home to Juame Plensa¡¯s Crown Fountain, a reflecting pool with two 50-ft. high glass block towers that display video images of local residents who spout cascades of water during their ¡°conversations.¡± Anish Kapoor¡¯s sculpture, Cloud Gate, (affectionately referred to by locals as ¡°The Bean¡±) reflects Chicago¡¯s famed skyline in its highly-polished stainless steel plates. The Jay Pritzger Pavillion, designed by world-famous architect Frank Gehry, is home to the Grant Park Orchestra and numerous other outdoor performances. For the less artistically inclined, the Lurie Gardens offer a scenic respite from the city¡¯s hustle and bustle. During the winter, McCormick Tribune Plaza is converted into an ice rink and opened for skating.

Lincoln Park Zoo

On the city¡¯s north side, Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the city¡¯s only free cultural institutions. The zoo is open 365 days a year and is famous for being one of the oldest zoos in the country. Despite its age, Lincoln Park Zoo remains dedicated to maintaining state-of-the-art facilities. The recently opened Regenstein Center for African Apes is a $26 million world-class facility built to provide chimps and gorillas with a natural, stimulating environment. 

Museums

Chicago¡¯s museums offer a variety of cultural experiences for almost any interest. The city¡¯s famed ¡°museum campus¡± is home to the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Adler Planetarium. The Field Museum showcases a variety of exhibits about natural history, including archeology, anthropology, geology, and zoology. Their collection includes Sue, the world¡¯s largest and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex. The Shedd Aquarium is one of the oldest public aquariums in the world and houses wildlife from around the world. The Adler Planetarium was the first planetarium built in the Western hemisphere. Here, visitors can view a number of different astronomy-related shows and exhibits, including historical collections, a 360? movie screen in the StarRider Theater, and, of course, the stars projected onto the planetarium¡¯s historic dome.

Besides the museum campus, Chicago is also home to the Art Institute of Chicago Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. The city¡¯s world-famous art museum houses a stunning collection that includes Asian, African, and American Indian artifacts, medieval suits of armor, textiles, and furniture as well as classic and contemporary paintings, drawings, and photographs. The Museum of Science and Industry is always a hit with kids, featuring highly interactive exhibits about everything from genetics to recycling. The U505 submarine here is the only one of its kind¡ªa genuine German submarine captured during World War II.

Shopping

Shopaholics will not want to miss shopping on Chicago¡¯s famed Magnificent Mile. Stores on this stretch of Michigan Avenue include Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, and Tiffany. There are some options for more budget-conscious shoppers as well, especially around Water Tower Place, a mall named after the Water Tower next door, the only downtown structure to survive the great Chicago fire of 1871. Although Water Tower Place includes a Marshall Field¡¯s store, anyone looking to really experience the perennial Chicago store should head over to the flagship location on State Street. In addition to 10 floors of shopping, the store¡¯s historic Walnut Room restaurant makes it worth the trip.

Pizza

No trip to Chicago is complete without some Chicago-style pizza. A unique culinary experience, the Chicago-style pizza is a ¡°fork-and-knife¡± pizza, with a thick crust, sauce on top, and lots and lots of cheese. This style of pizza originated from Pizzeria Uno, but other great versions can be found at Lou Malnati¡¯s and Gino¡¯s East.

Blues

Chicago is home to the Blues Brothers, and numerous local clubs cater to a wide variety of tastes. The big names play at The House of Blues, but smaller clubs offer a more genuine experience. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Guy opened a club here called, appropriately, Buddy Guy¡¯s Legends. 

Walk the lakefront

Chicago¡¯s lakefront is unique in that much of it was left open for beaches and parks. A 20-mile bike path runs along the lake from the South Shore Cultural Center to the Foster Avenue Beach House, passing all of Chicago¡¯s most famous attractions on the way. The path is crowded on weekends, but worth the trouble for locals and tourists alike.

Sporting events

Chicago sports fans love their teams, so tickets might be hard to come by, but the possibilities are wide. For baseball fans, the Chicago Cubs play at historic Wrigley Field on the north side of the city, and the White Sox play at their newer home, U.S. Cellular Field (formerly Comiskey Park). Wrigley Field¡¯s ivy-covered walls are the stuff of history, but the ticket opportunities at U.S. Cellular Field (¡°The Cell¡±) are much easier to get. The Chicago Bears won their last Superbowl in 1985, but they¡¯re hoping for better luck in their newly-remodeled stadium. Among much controversy, Soldier Field was recently renovated, preserving the historic colonnades, but adding a large modern-looking glass and steel structure that many feel doesn¡¯t fit with the building¡¯s classic architecture. Finally, the Bulls and the Blackhawks share The United Center, located west of the loop. 

Architectural Tour

Chicago has been a major architectural center for more than a century. The unique Chicago skyline is the home of the skyscraper, and the city¡¯s major buildings display a wide variety of architectural styles and influences. A good way to see all that Chicago architecture has to offer is to find one of the many architectural boat tours that frequent the Chicago River. Most of these tours can be booked without prior reservations along the river near Michigan Avenue.
