So you are planning a vacation to Tobago and don¡¯t know what to do and see? Don¡¯t worry. Below is a list of attractions and sites to see that will provide you with entertainment, education, and cultural experiences that you will remember all of your life.
One of the best places to start your exploration of the natural wonders of Tobago is the Buccoo Reef. This reef is located in a protected marine park and is made up of a coral that stretches from Pigeon Point to Bon Accord Lagoon. Here you will be able to view Star Corral, Flower Coral, Horn Coral, and literally millions of tropical fish and other wildlife. A glass-bottomed boat departs regularly to allow visitors who do not dive the opportunity to view these natural wonders. However, if you do dive equipment is also provided for diving opportunities.
A place of historical note is the Courland Monument and Great Courland Bay, and is located in the Tobago city of Plymouth. Here a fort was built in the 1600¡¯s by 600 pioneers from Latvia. In 1978 the Courland Monument was erected and dedicated, and sits next to Tobago¡¯s oldest town, fort, capital, and church.
Another historical location is Fort King George, located in the town of Scarborough, Tobago. It is the island¡¯s main historical site. The British built this fort in the 1700¡¯s, and it is now home to the National Fine Arts Centre and proudly displays local Tobago art and sculptures.
If you travel east of Plymouth you can visit the Arnos Vale Waterwheel. Built in 1857 this wheel was once the power hub of operation of the sugar factory¡¯s mill. It is still intact today and acts as a centerpiece for a nature park that hosts a restaurant, museum, gift shop, bar, and a theater. In addition to its historical and cultural value, the wheel is now home to a variety of native bird species, and sits in the center of a hiking trail system.
You will also want to visit Little Tobago, a small island that rests just off the tip of Tobago major. It was once known as the most productive and profitable cotton plantations of the 1700s. In 1909 William Ingram bought the islands and transformed it into a bird sanctuary. Mr. Ingram started the refuge with 24 Birds of Paradise that he brought over from Aru Island. In 1925 the refuge was turned over to the government, and today it offers bird watching and scuba diving for visitors. Tours are offered daily.
If you are in the mood for a mystery, visit the famous mystery tombstone in Plymouth. Here the final resting spot of a young woman and her child lay, marked with a puzzling inscription that has drawn many speculations as to what it means. Perhaps you will know what it means when you see it.
For a taste of local political history, you should visit the Scarborough Court House. Built somewhere around 1825, it is the home of the Tobago House of Assembly. It is a beautiful example of the Georgian Architecture.
If you still don¡¯t know exactly what to do or see while visiting the island of Tobago, no worries. There are many guided tour opportunities available on the island. If this is your first time to the island you may want to start your vacation with one or even several guided tours of local attractions and historical places. Tours are available for underwater adventures, hiking adventures, and cruises around the island are available. What ever you decided to see and do while visiting Tobago, remember to experience life on the island as an islander. Relax and enjoy the beauties that surround you.
