When traveling and staying in a hotel, security should be a high priority whether traveling for pleasure or business.  In recent years, hotel security has tightened.  Measures such as surveillance cameras, coded key cards and in-room safes have all helped to make visits more enjoyable.

There are a few safeguards you can do to increase the safety of yourself, your loved ones and your property.  

Be your own security guard.  Many would-be thieves aim for tourists, those that look unfamiliar with the area and carry a large amount of personal belongings.  Investigate the area around the hotel, the layout of hallways and rooms, become familiar with exits, hours that doors are open and places where access can be obtained.  Limit your belongings to just what you need and pack the rest away.

Keep an eye on your belongings - never leave them unattended.  If necessary, ask a hotel staff member to watch your belongings or leave them with a front desk/concierge manager.

Test the hotel; call the switchboard from a house phone and ask for yourself. Tell the operator you are not certain of the room number; you should be connected to your room but the room number should NOT be revealed.  If a room number is revealed, notify the hotel management or security and think about other hotels.  Also take note of the room key process.  Most hotels have coded key cards without a room number embossed on the card.  A secure hotel will write down the room number and hand it to you with the key cards ¨C an announcement of your room number is not a good demonstration of a secure procedure.  Checkout policies should be just as secure.  A pile of room keys lying on the front desk could mean security is lax.

If traveling alone, use the parking valet.  Walking from a lonely, dark and unfamiliar parking garage can make you into a prime target.

Utilize the in-room safe or the hotel safe.  Waving around elegant jewelry or large amount of cash is certain to attract a thief¡¯s attention.

Use the ¡°Do Not Disturb¡± sign and leave the television or radio on just loud enough to hear outside the door.  Even when you are not in the room, these are good sentries, giving the appearance that someone is inside.

If your hotel has a balcony, be certain the doors are locked when not in use.  Sliding glass doors should have handle locks as well as a track bar to lock the door in place.  To avoid the worry of someone breaking in, request a room without a balcony or sliding doors.

Use the peephole before opening the door to anyone ¨C even if you are anticipating company or have asked for hotel staff members.  

Use the door chain ¨C it¡¯s an added deterrent and lock all windows and doors.

Request a room on a high floor and one that is away from stair exits and elevators.  A timely get-away is desired by a thief, running down a long corridor is not.

Never be afraid to request the assistance of a hotel staff member.  If you feel safer with an escort or question the behavior of someone in or outside the hotel, simply ask.  If your room consists of many rooms, ask a staff member to stay with you until you've checked all areas.  The staff is there to assist and make your stay enjoyable.

Make certain that all parties of your family or group are conscience of safety, the rules and regulations and that they take extra precautions.  A family meeting isn¡¯t a bad idea.

Use what the hotel gives you, ask for things you need and test the hotel.  If something doesn¡¯t feel right, it probably isn¡¯t; move to another hotel.
