Renting a car can be a great travel option. If the traveler¡¯s own car is less than reliable or in the shop, the traveler can go to a rental office and drive away in a nice, reliable vehicle. 

  Car rental agencies are available at airports, and usually at other sites in any given city. This makes them convenient and accessible for most travelers. 

  When renting a car, a traveler should consider what his needs are. Does he need a reliable car for a business trip, or is he taking the family to Disney World? For most people, and most uses, a car in the economy or compact class will be sufficient, and these are usually available on short notice. However, specialty vehicles, such as vans and SUVs and luxury cars, such as convertibles, must be reserved some time in advance. 

  There are many ways a traveler can research rental car rates, but the most convenient way is probably through the Internet. Most travel search engines will research car rental rates and will present them to the Web surfer in list form, lowest rate first. Occasionally, a traveler can call the company¡¯s 800 number, or the individual rental office for better rates, and it never hurts to try, but car rental rates are not usually as flexible as hotel rates. Most travel sites will also allow a traveler to reserve the car right then, which is more convenient than having to call the 800 numbers for several companies to get rates and do reservations.

  A traveler will need a major credit card, in his name, and a valid driver¡¯s license to rent a car. Some agencies have an age limit, as well. Some agencies will add an additional driver free if the person is with the traveler and can show a valid driver¡¯s license. Some agencies charge a fee for adding a driver. The traveler can usually find out about these restrictions online or by calling the rental agency and asking about their policies beforehand. This may be a crucial part of the decision of which company to rent from, if a lot of driving is going to be involved on the trip.

  Once at the rental agency, the sales associate will almost certainly try to push the traveler to purchase the company¡¯s rental insurance. This is on a fee per-day basis, and the traveler should consider carefully whether it is necessary. He should know in advance if his credit card or personal auto insurance company will provide rental car insurance. If either company provides this insurance, then the rental company¡¯s insurance is probably not a necessary purchase. However, if the traveler has no rental coverage under his credit card or auto insurance, then the rental insurance is necessary. It covers all damage to the vehicle, even if it is the driver¡¯s fault. 

  Occasionally, even if a traveler has reserved a car far in advance, that class of car may not be available when he goes to pick up the car. In this case, he should ask the rental agent for either a smaller car, with a corresponding reduction in the rental rate, or for a free class upgrade. Most agencies will offer this option, but with some companies, the traveler will have to ask for it. In some cases, the agency may offer the traveler a discounted or free rental on his next car rental. If the traveler rarely rents a car, he should push for the upgrade or rate reduction.

  Priceline and Hotwire are two good Web sites for naming one¡¯s own rates, but the catch is that, with both sites, if the traveler accepts the price, or his bid is accepted, his credit card is charged immediately for the full amount, and he will not receive a refund if he cancels the reservation. Buyer beware.

  A traveler should always take a moment to familiarize himself with the location of all the car¡¯s instruments when he picks up the vehicle. He should note the location of the turn signals, headlights, windshield wipers, climate control, etc. He should also look for the release for the fuel door, if it is locked. He should also adjust all mirrors and the seat before pulling out of the parking lot. 

  When returning the car, the traveler should make sure he has it back about the same time of day as he rented it and the gas tank should be full. 

  Renting a car can be a good, economical way to travel, and a reliable means of transportation. Since the rental agency will replace the car if the traveler has a breakdown, it also means peace of mind for the traveler.
