Brayton (cotton industrialist), known for its exquisite shrubbery sculptures which house 80 topiary figures, including a variety of animals, birds and geometric patterns; Chateau-sur-Mer 每 an impressive estate, originally built for William Shepard Wetmore as an Italian style villa, remodeled in the Second Empire French style during the late 19th century; Chepstow 每 a stunning estate built in 1860 as a summer home for Edmund Schermerhorn, containing its original furnishings and 19th century paintings; Isaac Bell House 每 originally built in 1883 for cotton magnate Isaac Bell, combining English, European and Japanese architecture; Kingscote 每 striking Gothic Revival ※cottage§, built for George Nobel Jones, who fled the area at the onset of the Civil War; and Hunter House 每 a magnificent Georgian-style home owned by Jonathon Nichols, Jr. - who began construction in 1748 - eventually restored to its 1779 condition by The Preservation Society. Newport is also home to Astors* Beechwood Mansion 每 now a combination theater/museum, this was once a grand mansion that was host to the most elite of Newport Society. Among the many activities and events, the mansion offers Living History Tours, including daily tours, Victorian ghost stories and tour & food events. For those who wish to attend the Christmas Feast, you*ll be treated in high style, as you join the Astors for the traditional holiday dining during the winter of 1891. After the tour, guests will be taken to the Ballroom for an opportunity to mingle with other guests and staff members who represent Astor family members. Visitors are then presented with a holiday meal, entertainment and an invitation to waltz with their escorts. At the conclusion of the evening, holiday songs will be performed for the enjoyment of the guests 每 and you may even get a glimpse of St. Nick. This is a black tie event, encouraging attire such as tuxedos and evening cocktail wear.
If you*re looking for a great dining experience, with a little jazz thrown in on the side, a visit to Chan*s Fine Oriental Dining 每 in Woonsocket 每 is a ※must§. This unique restaurant has been serving sumptuous food since it opened its doors in 1905. You*ll enjoy fine oriental delicacies while being treated to a live cabaret, folk, jazz, blues or comedy performance. Luncheon specials include traditional Chinese fare, such as Egg Foo Young, Beef Teriyaki, Boneless Spare Ribs and Chinese Pork Strips served as combination platters. A rather unique tourist site, located in Cranston, Rhode Island, is the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum, with its promotion of the ukulele and its involvement in various expos and special events. This facility is dedicated to the history and promotion of all things pertaining to the ukulele, such as its makers and players. The Hall of Famers include King David Kalakaua 每 whose influence was instrumental in introducing the ukulele to the Hawaiian musical culture; Roy Smeck 每 talented Vaudevillian whose musical talent captivated audiences for more than 60 years; May Singhi Breen 每 the first to teach the ukulele in the school system, as well as the composer of musical arrangements which included the instrument in most printed music; Cliff Edwards 每 not only a talented ukulele player, but also the voice of Jiminy Cricket and the singer of ※When You Wish Upon a Star§ in Disney*s Pinocchio; and Arthur Godfrey 每 famed radio and TV star who played the instrument on his show and who also gave occasional lessons to the members of the audience. Perhaps the only ukulele notable who doesn*t appear among the Hall of Famers in this institution is Tiny Tim. The museum also offers merchandise for sale, including books, videos, music, collectibles and...you guessed it: ukuleles. For those who are true fans of this small wooden instrument, a visit to the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum is sure to fill the bill.
Water sport enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Ocean State Adventures, in Bristol. Try your hand at kayaking after some simple instructions on boat handling and safety. The Bristol Harbor tour begins at Poppasquash Point and 每 following your tour guide 每 you*ll glide around the harbor, becoming one with the breathtaking scenery. Smith Castle 每 located in Wickford 每 is a historic Rhode Island landmark encompassing four hundred years of history. Tour guides, dressed in period clothing, lead groups through the castle four times each day for approximately an hour. During your walk-through, you*ll see various collections which include paintings, antique furnishings and other items relating to the castle*s history. The landscape includes a variety of gardens, such as The 18th Century Garden 每 a reflection, though not a recreation, of the original Updike Family garden which was designed and planted during the mid-18th century. Others include The Dye Garden and the Kitchen Garden, all of which are filled with beauty, peacefulness and breathtaking views. Assorted graves and monuments that are linked to past residents are on the castle grounds, as well.
