If you＊re preparing to make your family vacation plans and have no destination in mind just yet, consider visiting the state of Michigan.  The Wolverine State has much to offer in the way of attractions and activities, and is very kid-friendly, as well.  The beauty and excitement of this wonderful vacation spot has all the makings of a memorable family get-away.  Here are some suggestions which may make the planning of your itinerary a bit easier.

Detroit is home to the Detroit Science Center 每 an interactive facility devoted to highlighting the fun and excitement of science, technology and engineering during the learning process.  Laboratories and exhibits include Dow Foundation Life Sciences Laboratory 每 compares the ecosystems of the city vs. the rain forest; Matter & Energy Laboratory 每 focusing on electricity, energy, magnetism and more (also includes the DTE Energy Sparks Theater); GM Motion Laboratory 每 more than 30 exhibits that deal with speed, motion and direction; and Waves & Vibrations Laboratory 每 devoted to light and sound.  Also available is the SBC Children＊s Gallery, which is a huge play area that＊s designed to introduce Pre-K aged kids to the wonders of science.  The onsite Resource Center offers a classroom environment in which subjects such as Space Sciences, Applied Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences are the focus of interest.  Also onsite are the Daimler Chrysler Science Stage, Dassault Systemes Planetarium and an IMAX Dome Theater.  This wonderful facility is open from Tuesday through Sunday, but closed on Mondays.

Yet another interactive children＊s facility 每 located in Grand Rapids 每 is The Grand Rapids Children＊s Museum.  This marvelous attraction was definitely designed with kids in mind, as they learn through play in this exciting environment.  Exhibits include Mirror Magic, Bees, Wee Discover, Scene & Be Seen, Pattern Play and Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles, in addition to numerous others.  Numerous special events are held on a regular basis, such as Traditions of Giving, Harvest of Cultures and more.  Programs such as Family Night are offered throughout the month, if your family is interested in group activities.  For those who are attempting to locate a family reunion facility, the museum offers its Resource Rooms for just such an occasion.  This is a large facility, with lots to do, so plan to spend the day and wear comfortable walking shoes.  The Grand Rapids Children＊s Museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday, and is closed on Monday.

The Potter Park Zoo of Lansing, Michigan is a great place to take the kids for a day of fun in the great outdoors.  Exhibits, which include over 100 species, are abundant and offer views of the various inhabitants in a natural setting.  You＊ll see Tamarins, Red Pandas, Meerkats, Patagonian Maras, Binturongs, Mandrills, Snow Leopards, Wolves, Oryx and a multitude of their animal cousins.  The Free Flight Aviary is also on the premises, with scenic walking trails which allow the guests to get a close-up peek at the various birds who live in the sanctuary.  The Bird & Reptile House is home to Gila Monsters, Emerald Tree Snakes, Bali Minah Birds and more.  The zoo also has a Feline/Primate House, whose inhabitants include Siberian Tigers, Lemurs, African Lions and a variety of other creatures.  Other exhibits include Wolf Woods, Duck Pond and Barnyard 每 kids can pet and feed the animals who make the barnyard their home.  In addition to all of this, pony and camel rides are available for the youngsters, and the Backyard Gardens are a great place for the entire family to catch their breath before continuing their tour of the zoo.  A number of programs and special events take place on a regular basis, and include opportunities such as overnight camp-outs, story times and summer camp.  This is a wonderful place to spend the day 每 just wear comfortable walking shoes.

Also located in Lansing is The MAiZE, owned and operated by the folks at Crane Centennial Farm 每 a huge walkthrough cornfield maze that will delight everyone in the family.  This enormous labyrinth will take you through twists, turns and dead-ends until you finally reach the end.  You may have to turn around now and then to retrace your steps, but that＊s part of what makes the adventure so exciting 每 kids just love it.  For those who are a bit less daring, mini mazes are also available.  During the month of October, the maze becomes Haunted MAiZE 每 a thrilling nighttime trip through the cornfields where spooks are lurking, awaiting their victims.  Other activities include hayrides and trike riding for the youngsters.  The entire family will enjoy visiting the pumpkin patch, or a good campfire in the evening.  There are several MAiZE locations throughout the country, and they always offer great entertainment for those who visit.  The MAiZE can take quite awhile to get through, however, so comfortable walking shoes are definitely in order for this attraction.

Mackinac Island, Michigan is host to Fort Mackinac 每 a breathtaking structure that was constructed during the American Revolution by the British.  Today, it＊s open for tourism with programs and activities such as Heritage of Mackinac, Fort Tour, Exhibits, Re-Enactments, Demonstrations and a variety of special events 每 some of which are presented on a daily basis.  Among the exhibits is Kids＊ Quarters 每 a huge interactive exhibit that encourages children to play and learn through numerous activities such as Checkers, Fife Playing and Dress Up.  Located within the Officers＊ Stone Quarters, this section of Fort Mackinac offers more than 16 interactive playtime adventures in which the youngsters can immerse themselves.  This section of the fort also offers a mini-store, by the name of Harold and Friends.  There＊s a great deal more to see on Mackinac Island, including museums, research facilities, an 18th century fur trading village, a butterfly conservatory and lots more.  If you＊re planning to explore the many sites of the island, plan to spend a lot of time and wear comfortable walking shoes.  The magnificent scenery is an added perk at this location, so you should also consider bringing a camera.

Michigan＊s Adventure Amusement Park 每 located in Muskegon, Michigan 每 is host to Shivering Timbers, Wolverine Wildcat, Adventure Falls, Corkscrew, HydroBlaster, Flying Trapeze, Ripcord and a multitude of other thrill rides.  This colossal park also offers the Carousel, Frog Hopper, Drummer Boy, Half-Pint Paradise and much more for the little ones.  There are also a number of water rides, such as Speed Splasher, Tidal Wave, Tree House Harbor, Jolly Roger, Commotion Ocean and Lazy River, as well as many others.  For families who are interested in having a place to catch their breath in a shaded area, cabanas are available for rent.  These are beautiful units, providing a canopied structure with a table and chairs, suitable for the entire family.  There are also lockers that are available for rent, just outside of the water attraction area, for outer clothing and footwear.  This is a good investment, since you can secure your clothing items while you＊re enjoying the water 每 full dress and shoes are required in the amusement ride section of the park.

Grandpa Tiny＊s Farm, in Frankenmuth, Michigan, is a great place to visit with the youngsters.  This historical petting farm allows children to interact with the various animals.  Kids can hold the baby animals, gather eggs in the henhouse, take a ride in a horse-drawn wagon and see various farming demonstrations.  They＊ll also get to meet the various barn inhabitants, including Leroy the Miniature Pony.  If they choose to, they can also bottle-feed the barn＊s babies or learn how to milk a cow.  They can even taste the milk, fresh from the cow, as they continue in their labors.  In the barnyard, there are a number of different types of fowl to be seen, and in the field, you＊ll get to see the workhorses in action.  Don＊t forget to stop in at Grandpa Tiny＊s Store, where you can purchase numerous items, such as fresh eggs 每 and even baby chicks and bunnies.  Whether you＊re planning a spring, summer or fall vacation, the farm will be available for your enjoyment.  This facility is open to the public from April through October, 7 days a week.  Be sure to wear attire that＊s suitable for a working farm and comfortable walking shoes.

Before leaving The Wolverine State, you＊ve got to see The Dutch Village Theme Park & Shopping, located in Holland, Michigan.  What makes this park unique is the setting: 19th Century Amsterdam.  In addition to a variety of park rides, your family will also enjoy The Witch＊s Weigh-House 每 an attraction that claims to determine whether or not you＊re guilty of witchcraft.  Signed certificates will be given to those who are found to be innocent.  Dutch dancing is performed by the Klompen Dancers 每 talented high school students who will entertain you to the tune of a 100-year-old street organ, called Gouden Engel (Golden Angel).  Numerous demonstrations are available, which focus on customs and traditions that are specific to the Dutch, and exquisite scenery abounds.  This is definitely one vacation destination that begs for a camera, so don＊t forget to bring yours along with you.  Round out your day with a stop at one of the many shops, where you can purchase real wooden shoes, children＊s costumes, tulip bulbs, excellent Dutch food and much, much more.  The Dutch Village Theme Park & Shopping is highly recommended to all families 每 especially those who have never experienced a Dutch community.  You＊ll be very happily surprised by what you find.
