The beautiful coastal town of Bar Harbor, ME offers a bevy of activities for families to enjoy. Whether you are looking for educational opportunities, nature appreciation, shopping excursions, or simply wanting to relax with the kids Bar Harbor has it all.
A longtime favorite activity for tourists is to go on a whale watching excursion. Located at the town pier are many tour boats from which to choose. The kids can enjoy sailing over the choppy waters of the ocean while searching for whales as well as other oceanic inhabitants. Seals can sometimes be found poking their shiny black heads out of the waves just short distances away. Two of the more popular excursions to partake of are the "Friendship V" or "Acadian" tours.
After taking a tour, why not head in to the downtown area with the kids to check out Main St's many shops and restaurants? There are some fun places to check out for unique souvenirs and lots of places to get delicious food to eat. Right in the center of town is the Village Green, a quaint park where the kids can run or relax on the soft grass. Sometimes in the summer months there are concerts or art shows held here.
Is it raining out? Don't worry, there are still fun things to do with the kids to keep them from boredom. Check out the Abbe Museum, which is full of Native American history, culture, and heritage. There are two locations, in the downtown area of Bar Harbor, or at the Sieur De Monts springs area in Acadia National Park. Here the kids can be transported back in time over a period of 10,000 years as they inspect the 50,000 or so historical indian artifacts on display. There are hands on learning activities, exhibits, and educational programs available.
The Mount Desert Oceanarium offers more great educational experiences as well. The oceanarium houses both the Maine Lobster Museum and Lobster Hatchery. Here the kids can see up close those very popular seafood creatures, the lobster. At the hatchery, watch as eggs are harvested from female lobsters or check out the touch tank at the museum to get up close and personal with various sea creatures like starfish or sea crabs.
Bar Harbor's most famous attraction and New Englands only national park, Acadia, is located here. If the town of Bar Harbor itself isn't enough to keep those kids happy and active then this is the place to go. Days upon days can be spent exploring, swimming, biking, hiking, and just playing here at Acadia National Park. Kids will love the smooth sand beach, where only the brave attempt to swim the cold waters. On the beach, have the kids look for shells, sand dollars, or maybe even sea glass. A small tributary flows into the ocean from the far end of the beach and kids can have hours of fun trying to sail little boats down it or splashing their toes in the water.
Acadia has many hiking trails to explore, check out the Hulls Cove visitor center at the park entrance for guide books. You'll want to check out difficulty levels as some of the trails aren't meant for young children. Did you bring your bikes? Then check out the carriage trails for some mountain biking fun. If hiking the trails doesn't sit well with the kids, drive up to the top of Cadillac Mountain. Here the kids will feel like they are on top of the world. The view of Bar Harbor and the ocean is spectacular.
Still in Acadia there are many natural attractions to check out, get a visitor's guide for a complete listing. By far though, the most fun to see, and the most fun for the kids, is Thunderhole. Take a walk down wooden platforms, over rock and stone, towards the ocean. Look over the rail to see the big hole carved in rock from thousand of thousands of years of crashing waves. If the time is right, the kids can hear what appears to be the boom of thunder as the water rushes in. Watch out though, you may get wet.
Vacationing with the kids in Bar Harbor, ME not only brings the family together for some quality time, it also offers a diverse selection of activity to keep everyone in the family happy. The kids won't have any reason to complain of boredom while on a trip in this wonderful coastal town. |
